Gone-to-ground in the craters of Coventry

An engineer for a Dad, but it was my Mum (a teacher) who bought me a box of WHFB figs way back when.
I'm sure it was an idea of her mate's, who's son had some.

That all stopped when I left home, but I got back into it when the Missus said I needed to get a hobby to get me off MMOs.

So, my Dad's background, with my Mum's suggestion.

Yes, my dad is a antique collector and restorer, as well as a blacksmith, so the crafty part has always been there, and I got into 40k due to my brother, so I did inherit a bit from my family.

My father did enjoy assembling Gundam kits and the like with me when I was a child, but I don't think he assembled any until I professed interest. He does like to look at my models and if he had the time I think he would start an army. Of course it's nearly impossible to pull my father away from books, he's definitely a bookworm.

I inherited that from him, so that's probably while I love reading rulebooks so much.

Yeah. My Dad loves models when he was younger and used to make Airfix planes. He likes looking at my models and asks what I'm doing etc etc.

Yes, but I didn't relise it, my dad used to have loads of airfix models hanging on his ceiling, I never knew that when I started playing warhammer, but i'm starting to get him back into it (he's starting sisters, very slowly).

it's great though because his friend gave me ~60 old paints, most of which still work.

so, in the "purest" sense of the word inherit, i did.
I'm in more or less the same boat. Especially so, since my father's main modeling interest was ships. He hasn't done any modeling work in several decades, so I only had a vague knowledge of his past interest, but I've found out more since my interest independently grew. I may eventually inherit his greatest undertaking, which the birth and necessary raising of my sister (and me, two years later) put on hold, as he fears his failing eyesight and shaky hands may not allow him to complete it, himself. As much as I wish him full bodily control and functionality in his advancing age, I'd rather like to take over the project, especially since that means he'll revert to his other hobby - nothing like visiting home to work on a model while enjoying a pint of dad's home-brewed lager.

My dad started playing historical way before I was born and still has some of his figs from the 50s. I started when I was 5 painting acw using his artist paints in the tube and using them when Him and his friends would get together at the house. And now I share the same expeiriences with my 2 boys who are 10 and 6.

I wouldn't say that I inherited the love of hobby from my parents, but they definitely played an indirect part in getting me into it.

My mom was a history teacher and during summers the fam would take trips to historical sites, most often they were Revolutionary War and Civil War battlefields, as well as one trip to the Alamo. The favorite part for me, every trip, was the miniature dioramas set up to illustrate the battle that took place on or near the museum. I used to love the narratives that played out on those scenes, and admired the attention to detail and dedication it took to make those displays. Even the ones that didn't portray battles were intriguing to me. This fascination with wanting to own and paint my own toy soldiers led me to blow my meager savings of birthday money on some miniatures and paint, much to the chagrin of my 2 older brothers, as we were saving up to purchase the original NES.

Since then I haven't looked back and now own thousands of dollars in mostly GW products. Odlly enough, absolutely ZERO historical models in my collection, which is strange as they are what stoked my imagination to begin with.

Probably got it from my dad but not wargaming per se, more Airfix modelling and "army men". That started the whole enjoying modelling thing.
He has some battleships from about 1955 which he "glued" together using chewing gum (since he was in hospital at the time and couldnt use super glue). Please kids dont swallow chewing gum, if it lasts 60 years on plastic.....
