My father is a model steam train maker. He makes about the best narrow gauge 16mm (16 to the foot) real steam locomotives in the UK. His workshop is formidable, he has numerous lathes/Milling machines and casting suites. I have learnt how to use a couple of these machines but i am not particularly interseted in steam trains. He did however inspire me to do creative hobbies and try and be proffesional when it comes to model making. Do any of the rest of the dakkanauts have a parent/guardian/mentor who got them into model making/Or did you teach yourself all you know?

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

My dad's been playing wargames for decades. I pretty much got it straight from him. He and I built some models when I was a kid too.

Kind of. My Dad was into making his Formula 1 models and used to make air-fix and stuff as a kid (still does but now he's REALLY good, multi-award winning, published etc - git) so when my brother turned up with these miniatures he encouraged it. I remember the first model I 'painted' - I had to dictate it to him because all we had were his enamel paints which he didn't want me to knock over I guess it's kind of inherited, I still adore that indefinable 'hobby' smell - that could just be the fumes from the glue though

I was watching Tom and Jerry. It was the episode where they all break their leg, and Tom is building things to get at Jerry without disturbing Spike. Anyway, I suddenly realized that I wanted to make a model. So, my dad took me to Hobby Lobby and I picked up a Snap Tite AH64 model. And that is how I got into the hobby.

My Uncle got me into WWII aircraft getting me a model kit with two P47s, and an HE111, which we built together. My Uncle and I are really close because of working on model kits together.

Nope.

In fact, he inherited the want to build and paint an army from me. Got the whole thing done, too.

Then he gave up and gave me all his Guard after trying to learn to play.

My dad used to bring home model kits when I was a kid, probably starting around 5-6 until my parents divorced when I was 8, so he definitely got me started. He didn't, however, try to help me in the slightest during assembly or the application of transfers - it was all up to me to follow the instructions and get things right.

He did give me pointers when I asked and pointed out things like fingerprints from glue-covered fingers, but I think he was helping to develop critical thinking and direction-following skills. I continued to build models through my early teens and was painting fantasy models at the same age I was building space shuttles, apache helicopters, and various jet fighters.

I got my love of painting models from my father, he was a first gen d&d player and painted models for his gaming group. Some of my fondest memories were of watching him paint, and wondering how he did it.

However... my brother & I seemed to have both been born with a love for art! Be it modeling, painting, drawing, sculpting, etc!

It skipped a generation to get to me.

My mother's father was a modelmaker (engineer).

My dad was a practical man.
None of my siblings inherited the hobby traits - just me.

Granddad introduced me to toy soldiers.

My father & step father both played D&D back in the day, and strongly encouraged my interest in W40k, especially my father after taking me into a GW for the first time around 2005. Neither helped me with my hobby skills, although my tools/greenstuff was completely and still is funded by my father

No, my Dad even used to go so far as to refer to them as silly soldiers. I don't think he could see the attraction of sitting inside while the sun was out and he wanted his car washed.

My older brother also started at about the same time as me but could handle the idea of reading a rule book and so stopped shortly afterwards.

I grew up with a beautifully painted model of a battleship on display, but never saw my Dad building models.

I got into gaming through Space Crusade and Hero Quest - loved the models.

My Dad thought the hobbies were sad, and said as much. I remember the day I realised that didn't matter, and just went for it.

He now collects trains. I think, in part, because he saw how much fun my brother and I get out of our toy soldiers.

What a wonderful tale of the circle of life.

My dad despises it, thinks it's a waste of time and money.
My mum just lets me get on with it, but more or less agrees with my dad

My gf thinks I need to grow up a bit and focus on real-life problems.

No-one I know otherwise plays the game, so tbf I might as well sell the lot and start watching soap operas...

Aye the same.

I think my mother has mellowed on it as I get older, but I guess at 37 she realised I'm not going to change, she even brought Aurelia some models for Christmas last year. Still weary to buy me any, thinks I have enough.

Hopefully I'll get to pass it on to the boys though, both seem very interested in it as they are getting older.

My dad always got me lots of lego, so kind of

Also bought me the (I think) 40K 2nd edition starter set for my birthday, which got me into the whole wargaming hobby initially.

However, he has recently got back into model trains, so I have been helping him with tips on how to pimp his terrain and scenery.

My Dad mainly does historical modelling now but has done a lot of fantasy miniatures and some gaming. Not warhammer but other GW games and some other older stuff, he was always more of a collector than a gamer, but when I was old enough we started things like Judge Dredd and Space Hulk. Anyway he first started modelling balsa wood aircraft and got into plastic kits when first released in the 50s.

My dad was into building terrain/landscapes/train sets. We played the clicky game "Mageknight" when I was younger. He wasn't into playing that much, he enjoyed making some terrain. I went through highschool/sports ereyday and jumped into 40k. We build a few tables with terrain together as father/son stuff. He doesn't play 40k, but he knows a ton of information about terrain/building stuff.

Now he plays WoW, and I'm into 40k

I first got into modeling with Gundam kits in the late 90s when my dad was stationed in Japan. It was pretty much impossible to avoid them, and I only remember maybe building ten or so models, but I went through some of my old stuff to find TONS of SD Gundams and B-Daman chibi models. I suppose in that regard my parents encouraged me.

Though 8 or so years later when I got into 40k through the DoW games, they weren't really receptive of it. Though, my parents have seen some of the stuff that I've painted, and they've been to the place where I play a number of times and overall their opinion has improved.

I would actually like to get my dad into some kind of productive hobby like modeling, seeing as how most of his free-time is spent watching TV...
