Well I was going to have the rune priest stay on his own, since in a larger army he will anyway so I may as well be used to it.

I'd be happy with that if i was playing you. One Lascannon and your psychic defence and 100p HQ is dead.

So run an 8 man squad, attach a wolf guard AND a rune priest to him, otherwise you WILL lose him to a dark lance, lascannon, missile launcher, rokkit launcha, impaler cannon, etc.

Well you're gonna have to take a squad of wolf guard then aren't you ?
The RP can solo better than your average libby, because he's got a 2+ not 3+, but he's still pancake material for anti-tank fire

Well he'd be out in the open at some point.
Anyway, I was curious. I have that build I listed. When I'm playing, how do I figure out my playstyle and what I would need to play to that playstyle when I expand my army?

I'm still new at Space Wolves, but i've seen the best results from mine by castling/turtling while throwing as many long range S7 and higher shots at the enemy, then moving to engage once they are thinned out/on foot. In an objective game your 'base camp' should be an area that is within roughly 13" inches of at least half the objectives on the table, so that you can spread out to claim them during the last turn or two. In KP missions, keep your army together as a steamroller and work together to take out enemy threats.
If any other more experienced Sons of Russ disagree, please school me. Like I said, i'm still learning.

I use a 'hybrid' list. I usually take 2-3 10 man GH squads with standard and 2 meltas and 2 5 man GH squads w/flamer in razorbacks w/las-tl plas. I have been thinking of replacing the flamer with plasma. Just depends on how the meta shifts towards termies.

I don't play 500 point games (they are not balanced at all, as some armies are stronger / weaker than others at such low points)
But at anything 1000 (the minimum points level IMHO for an even sort of competitive game) to 2000 (the ideal points level), i bring almost the same Grey Hunter groups:
5 Grey Hunters. 1 Meltagun. Rhino - 115 points.
In 1000 points i take 3 groups, and give them all MotW so they are not entirely useless in CC. So, add 15 points.
In 2000 points I give them a Wolf Guard with a Combi-Melta and Lightning claw to be more reliable against tanks, have better leadership, and do some damage in CC. Add 38 points.
In my opinion, this 148 point unit is the best way to run Grey Hunters. In 2000 point games, i take at least 4 of them.
The first thing to realize is that they are not assault units. If you wanted, you could take 9 GHs, MotW, Wolf Standard, and a power sword, and then give them a Wolf guard with a PF and Combi-melta, and sure, it would be sort of deadly, but it would also cost... 258 points!
For that same price i can get 4 Thunerwolf Cavalry, TH/SS, or almost any other decent CC unit that would eat that grey hunters unit for breakfast. Grey Hunters ARE better than other marines in close combat, but that doesn't mean they should be kitted out as a close combat unit, it just means what when they do ultimately end up in close combat, you are not as screwed as you would be playing regular space marines. Obviously you may have to assault with them (actually, i usually do end up assaulting with my grey hunter units, but by that point i am usually just mopping up anything that survives my shooting phase), but that should not be their primary role when so many other units can do assaults so much better.
In my opinion, the best way to use grey hunters it to give them a melta and a combi melta, put them in a rhino, and use them to kill enemy tanks and hold objectives while the rest of the army shoots the enemy to pieces (12 missile launchers, 3 lasplas razorbacks, and 2 landspeeders + lots of small arms fire from scouts and GHs is what i use). Only then would i use GHs as a assault unit, many times backed up my thunderwolves, to kill or tie up anything that is left.
As for the runepriest:
1. Always put him in a squad, and probably in a rhino.
2. Don't bother with upgrades like runic armor, since you'll probably just be using him to shoot LL at people and resist enemy psychic powers. The only upgrade worth taking IMHO is chooser of the slain, and only if you have nothing else to spend 10 points on...

For a 500-1000 points list, wolf standards and wolf guards are not recommended. They take too much points and their utility isnt that needed. For that points range you want as many cheap models than quality models.
For grey hunters, I suggest a 10 man squad with a loadout according to the meta. Greyhunters with out a wolfguard is strictly a shooting unit, and a cheap one at that (195 points at most). Dont hesitate to bring 2 plasmas. The Rhino is great for ferrying 10 man greys into firezone, and because it has 2 fire points, you can unleash special weapons safely. Forget about power weapons or even MoTW. they are worthless in 500-1000 points games.
Keep your HQ simple. A Runepriest with chooser is solid. BS5 Living Lightning is worlds apart from a BS4 on a mere 10 points. And it also keeps genestealers from getting into assault with your units. 2nd power could be muderous hurricane against hoard armies.
At this points range, the most efficient and relaible assault unit you can get is either a Dread with wolftooth (115), or if you have the models, an Iron priest on TWC and 4 Cyberwolves with wolftooth as well (165). Those are REALLY solid choices that wont cost more than 200.
For fire support, you can pitch in a long fang squad or 2. If you have the points, bring 10 MLs. IF not, 5 MLs and 5 HB. HBs rock face assuming you play in a 4x4 table which you should at these pointages. In my experience, 3 long fangs would be overkill but overkill is underrated.
You should remember one thing should you expand your army: 1000 points games on a 4x4 table is extremely different from 1500 point games on a 6x4 table. You almost never scale up your army and build from the ground up, but the choices i listed above are solid nonetheless.

Oh joy, radically conflicting advice. Automatically Appended Next Post: I want to glue my models TODAY so I need to know what I'm doing. Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok, so I added the COTS and a PP on the scouts. The main issue I'll be having is getting a hand off of a shotgun to hold the meltagun on the scout. >_<
On a random note, how old is the current Razorback box? I'm buying one from a local hobby shop since it's closer than the GW. How can I tell if it's an older box? They somehow have a Necrons 2nd ed codex which worries me about how old the razorback is. What differences are there with older ones if they do have those? Automatically Appended Next Post: On a separate note, how do I represent a COTS? It's supposed to have a smaller diameter than the rune priest's base right?

You can always glue up some bolter marines And keep in mind that you're building your force. There's waaay more than one army type you can write up for space wolves, hence the conflicting advice. But if you whack together 20 or so grey hunters, your scouts, a RP model and a razorback/rhino or two, then you've got a foundation you can build upon, once you've got more of a feel of what you're doing. After that, if you get a dread and a HS choice (Long fangs, pred/vindicator (although i recommend vindi's in pairs), you'll have a neat little 1000~ point force that you can add more too, depending on your local metagame and what you feel you need/you like.
I'm not sure how old the Razorback kit is, but its not terribly old, its on one of the new rhino chassis'. It looks a little something like this on the front :
Remember, you can use the Razorback kit to make a rhino/razorback. You can't use both at the same time... But it will give you options to try! I'd be surprised if they had an old razorback (When was that model replaced?) And the necron codex is that old, so don't worry about it
For CotS... It's tricky. I use a mini marine, where you make a marine all out of shoulderpads he's a little bit taller than Old Njal's cyber raven, but it hasn't caused much issue for me and my friends, as he tends to be placed quite high and been fairly obvious if he can see of not . The rules say the marker needs to be smaller than the rune priest model, it says nothing about the base...

Oh. So I had it backwards about the size.
I doubt it's very old though. I find out tomorrow.
Also isn't the Necron codex in it's 3rd edition making theirs an edition older than the outdated one?

Keep going Portaljacker, make your army. I know you don't want to waste any models or money and you'll have to wait for the next influx at your Birthday or whatever but if you get 2 x Troops and a HQ you can start gaming and therefore Learning and so find what works and what doesn't for you. Then your choices will be more informed, I think most people accept that "Counts As Models" are a necessity when you are just starting out as no one has 1000 of $$ hanging around.. So just find some friendly gamers and start gaming, WYSIWYG is for tourney's and people with OCD...

The razor appears to be current. The box art is the same. The sprue with the razor weapons says 2001 and has the TL HB and TL LC. The sprue with the storm bolter, hatches, smoke launchers and stuff says '99 and the two big sprues also say 2001. Automatically Appended Next Post: I called customer service and the guy confirmed it was new. Then I did the obvious thing and saw that the copyright on the bottom was 2008.
