This is something I struggle with every single time I hit the LGS or pop onto TTGN and see a miniature (or range of miniatures) that catch my eye but I know will not see any use. My LGS just started carrying modern micro armor miniatures from GHQ and it took all of my will power to not buy an armful "just to display" which really means sitting at the bottom of a rubbermaid container or collecting dust on my work table.

There have been times when my resolve wasn't so strong. I have three fleets of Aeronef ships that have yet to see table time along with some Renegade Legion anti-grav tanks and an entire 1500 point Wargods of Aegyptus mummy force.

Only miniatures I have made for a game I don't play yet is a Flames of War Bersaglieri Platoon, but I plan on starting to play soon.

I have no miniatures from games that I don't play yet.

I have some WM stuff, but I no longer play it and no-one wants Cygnar stuff (but I liked them - stryker went into the crucible to be melted down for reuse though. The model is fuggly and the rules for it are less than useful).

Probably like many others, I have leftover models from games I no longer play, though.

Warzone, Kryomek, VOID, Battletech, Starship Troopers, etc.

Some have been repurposed. Others simply languor in a box, neglected and forgotten.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

I've got a necromunda Van Saar gang that's seen 1/2 a half game in the 10 years since purchased.

Also, I rebased touched-up and dipped about 50 Heroclix figs for Flying Lead but have yet to play FL or any other modern urban combat game with them.

In addition, I have miniatures from Void, Warzone, Legions of Steel, Warhammer, AT43 and others, but they are all intended for projects/rules other than the game they were created for. I've no plans to play any of those games.
