I doubt the students thought so either...which is probably one of the reasons they were so vocal.

1. 1 wounded vet vs. an entire room of Coumbia students-yea thats a fair fight.

You want me to call you a waaaaaaahmbulance? I already said they were douchey in my first post (but you have a habit of forgetting things to make your points seem viable). I don't particularly care what they did, I'm not them and a townhouse meeting is one of those silly free speach events. They didn't bring guns to the house and no one was threatened so honestly, it's on you to get the hell over it. You already hate columbia, you've posted articles like this in the past. We get it.
Whatever mang.

Like many have said before, the actions of the students were unfortunate. Their reactions to the part of the speech that they found to be disagreeable propaganda (lumping us vs them blindly) was less than tactful. They did not boo his every word, just parts that they felt were military spoon fed. What does that point he made have to do with bringing ROTC to Colombia? Sounded more like join up talk. That is military dogma all over the world though, culture "a" says culture "b" are cannibals, well poisoners, hate freedom etc. It helps them justify death, invasion, or just to promote solidarity. This does not make it right, but has been going on for thousands of years. Having a few well spoken spokes people in this situation would not have gotten the publicity for sure, but may have conveyed the same ideas in a more tactful argument.
On a aside note, I think the term "war hero" is thrown around a little too much. More propaganda? enlist and be a hero? Hot chicks will spend your money..errr want you? maybe...
Veteran for sure, and lucky to be able to tell his tale. Hero, maybe to a few. Over use of a label like that can give the word less meaning, like awesome. Test moved back a day being awesome....nice maybe but not awesome. Getting shot 11 times and live to tell the tale, amazing, lucky, but getting injured while in military does not = hero to me. Jumping into a freezing lake to save a drowning kid, awesome hero. Just my opinion, yours may vary.

That may be so, but some of his comments appear to be of a racist (at least in the popular sense) nature. That may not have been his intent, but given what he was discussing he should have known to tread lightly; especially given his audience. I mean, I guess people don't like being called out when they say something that isn't well thought out, but that doesn't necessarily mean its wrong to call them out for saying it.

Its that quote about people wanting to kill members of the audience. Its been reported in a couple of different ways, some of them are completely innocuous, and others come off as foolish given the audience.
For example, Columbia's newspaper is reporting the quote as
“It doesn’t matter how you feel about war. It doesn’t matter how you feel about fighting. Other parts of the world are plotting to kill you right now when you go to bed,”
If that's accurate, then I can understand the reaction of the Columbia students, even if it was crass. Its the sort of thing I would expect from liberal, New York college kids. However, Huffington Post reports it very differently.
"It doesn't matter how you feel about the war. It doesn't matter how you feel about fighting. There are bad men out there plotting to kill you."
If that's accurate, then the response was totally uncalled for.
Ah, audio. Yeah, Huffington Post reported the quote inaccurately. He could have presented himself far better, as his argument very little to do with ROTC; at least not the "controversial" part.

Neither are intrinsically racist, but I can see how the first might be interpreted that way. A hostile audience will always run with the worst possible interpretation if you give them the option to, and sometimes even if you don't.
Either way, listening to the audio he was clearly uncomfortable (understandably) and the crowd reaction itself seems to have been largely oversold (though that may be a reality of the microphone placement). Still, its a credit to the audience that the guy still received applause at the end.

It seems he wasn't really prepared for an audience of that nature. Also, it seems it needs to be stated again that, even according the vet, that it was a vocal minority and didn't reflect the student body as a whole. Are we really surprised that some people can be rude? Has no one spent any time on YMDC?
I also don't believe that vets are sacrosanct. They were rude but he's a big boy and will get over it. The military doesn't need a bunch of people white knighting to protect its honor and inadvertently sounding just as asinine as the people they are criticizing.

Polonius has nailed this, so really all that's left to be said is to point at that the New York Post really is a rag. I mean "Maschek, 28, had bravely stepped up to the mike Tuesday..." If he's brave or not that's really up to the reader, directly informing us of something so subjective is just gakky reporting. For that matter, focussing on the poor behaviour of the students is even shittier* when the real issue is whether the ROTC should be let back in or not.
*they're college students engaged in politics, of course their behaviour is ugly and their opinions lacking in nuance. Automatically Appended Next Post: Frazzled wrote:I don't know about the people you hang out with, but here thats an invitation to a hospital visit.
Dude, it's college. Everything everyone says is likely to be called racist by someone else. And those accusations of racism are likely to be called racist. I can't help but think that if one instance of one veteran getting heckled while giving a politically contentious speach is able to make such a splash in the media, then it's likely that across the board vets are being treated very well indeed.

Reserve Officers Training Corps. Basically when you go to college you take military classes, at some point you make a commitment and they pay for college and when you graduate you are an officer in the military. It is sort of a poor mans military academy. I don't mean that in a bad way, West Point and the like can't produce all our officers.

ROTC is a good program for the point Ahtman said, there are very few military schools and academies for the military; West Point, Annapolis, the Merchant Marine Academy, Air Force Academy, Virginia Military Institute, and Citadel are pretty much the only military schools around this side of the coast. ROTC allows people in non-military schools to become an officer seeing as though a college degree is a must for commissioning.
@killkrazy,
Sure it made the war effort look bad, but it would feel so right to knock out one of those students.

Which I'm fairly certain isn't what happened here.
It just seems that the soldier was asked to speak about something, but he wasn't a very good public speaker and didn't think to tailor his speech to the audience he was presenting to.
Is it obnoxious that he was heckled during the speech? Of course.
But is it something that was to be unexpected? Nah.

Actually it does, the rascist decks the minority before they say anything while the non-rascist decks them afterwards.
Now if a person calls me a rascist I'll use a witty retort to get that person to initiate a physical attack, at that time I will respond with 'equal force' in the face. I am not initiating the verbal attack and the other person is initiating physical harm. I am merely defending myself.
Or instead of decking the guy in the face I can lawsuit him in the face for slander if I lose my job or something for it.

Why do you keep talking like someone in the crowd yelling slander will cost you your job? There's a really big difference between someone initiating a formal charge against a person and heckling.

halonachos wrote:ROTC is a good program for the point Ahtman said, there are very few military schools and academies for the military; West Point, Annapolis, the Merchant Marine Academy, Air Force Academy, Virginia Military Institute, and Citadel are pretty much the only military schools around this side of the coast. ROTC allows people in non-military schools to become an officer seeing as though a college degree is a must for commissioning.
The issue is that the quality of ROTC programs varies a lot depending on the commanding officer, and so the institution carries a poor reputation in some circles.
