Dude awesome news!

I've already decided I'm not re-reading until I see at least the first season of the HBO series. They are doing a great job with the trailers... I about died when I saw the last trailer!

Havent seen any trailers. nothing but basic channels here. are there any online peeks?

btw I hope Dany and Jon arent the focus of the book. Predictable protagonist, 'good guy' types, blech. I hope it gets back to revolving around Tyrion he is far more interesting and I missed him in Feast for Crows.

Everyone that was missing from 'Feast For Crows' is supposedly in 'Dance with Dragons'

I worry about the series reaching its conclusion too...

We've still got The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring due...

A Game of Thrones came out in 1996.

A Clash of Kings came out in 1998.

A Storm of Swords came out in 2000.

A Feast for Crows came out in 2005

A Dance with Dragons is, allegedly, coming out in 2011.

George R.R. Martin is 62...

Does he have 10+ years left in him?

Selfishly speaking, I certainly hope so!

This series is on that short list of mine known as "Buy Immediately (Yes, even in hardcover) and Read Immediately".

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got into this series late and was spoiled because A Feast for Crows came out two months after I had finished the first 3 books. Then I waited 5 years...

Although, like most of you, I'll believe it when a copy has arrived on my doorstep from Amazon.

I would argue Tyrion is far more of a good guy than he wants to let on. I'll bet Tyrion ends out being one of the good guys in the end.

Mostly, on my phone.

Next book is due to feature Jon, Dany and Tyrion, who he's always said are the 3 main characters (rampant speculation alert!)

Spoiler:
and arguably are all related: Jon is presumably Lyanna & Rhaegar's bastard, and Tyrion could feasibly be Aerys and Joanna's bastard (which would explain a heck of a lot). This would make them the 3 heads of the dragon...

He's also said that the Ironmen will feature heavily, and we can expect to see Victarion POV if not Aeron also. Quentyn Martell is also a POV. There's also at least one new POV who he's said is one of the first wave mini's from Dark Sword's line, which means Melisandre, The Hound or Knight of Flowers
Spoiler:
(assuming, not unreasonably, that neither of the latter two are dead)

and the Prologue is the Skinchanger from beyond the wall that Jon has a showdown with. I have a feeling I've forgotten someone, too.

I'll just say that they've pretty much already said who Jon's mom is and Ned was most certainly his father. Jon's mom is also suppose to be the sister of the White Cloak Ned killed that carried the Valyrian blade Dawn. And I wouldn't bet on Tyrion being a bastard either.

SO it has been 11 years since we read about the characters in A Storm of Swords? Wow, I don't even know if I want to bother. It has just about been too long.

Yeah, i don't mind waiting a few years for especially amazing novel series or characters but 11 years is pushing my limits too. I mean David Weber's Harrington series has had 2-4 years between the main story line novels but that's acceptable. 11 years is insane really.

I am pretty excited about this, but I will have to wait for my local library's copy to be available.

I certainly do not mind "door stopper" books (reading Towers of Midnight right now), but 1000+ pages begins to seem a bit long. And when is book 6 coming out?

I saw that on yahoo weather. Seems like a coincidence to me because I still don't believe book 5 is coming out.

@Hulksmash: It is insane, but I don't blame Martin for all of it. Heck a lot of the wait was due to Martin being pissed at his fans. The ones that said he better hurry up and not pull a "Jorden". George was pissed because Robert was a friend and it was demeaning to the man's memory. The implication of George dying before it was finished really irritated him as well. I don't blame him for losing interest in writing the books and holding off in spite, but I really wish the book would have came out before 2010.

That's exactly the worry I have.
I mean, Robert Jordan(or, more correctly, James Oliver Rigney) died when he was doing The Wheel of Time, which is equally as epic as aSof&F.
If GRRM spends 10 years on each book...

I checked my amazon account, I pre ordered this in April 2009 cos they said it would be out in September!

Fatty wants to get a move on. In fact, I'm so pissed off with him I might cancel it despite me loving his books, the man's forced my hand.

Just an update: George R. R. Martin has not, as of March 28, actually finished 'A Dance With Dragons'. He still has some chapters to go.

He has said that the manuscript tops 1,600 pages already. That doesn't translate to printed total, but that is still a lot of pages.

George R. R. Martin has implied that he is finished actually writing 'A Dance With Dragons'. This isn't confirmed yet, just him saying Kong is dead. He has refered to 'A Dance With Dragons' as Kong for quite some time now. So again, gain of salt and all that.

He was pretty good at first, but maybe he is getting overwhelmed? Lots going on for him, and I have this feeling the story is getting much bigger than he ever expected it to be. Especially as this book and A Feast for Crows were supposed to be one volume. He even says he had to split parts out of this book for another one!

There were rumors going around of some drug problems. I have no idea if they're true or not, so take it with a large grain of salt.

And, I can definately see how the story has gotten too large to easily handle any more. When the series first started, almost all of the action was confined to 2 or 3 parallel stories. As more and more characters have been introduced and all of these characters have split off to have their own adventure, the storyline keeps getting more and more convoluted.

The old D&D advice "Don't split the party!" applies to works of fiction as well as P&PRPG.
