For those that have been waiting for the next book in George R. R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire', a pubication date of July 12, 2011, has been set in the U.S. This is the 4th of 5th such date since 2007 to be set, so take it with a grain of salt.

Information taken from http://www.georgerrmartin.com/if-update.html

Edit: That date is also for the UK and Europe.

This date is relayed from the Man himself.

This is huge news for ASoFaI fans... I'm as excited about the book as I am the TV series.

Painting my guardsmen will now take a backseat to re-reading the series...

DUDE! DUUUUUDE! this is awesome.

For god sakes It's about time. I was hoping that the TV show would be the kick Martin needed to finish the series. I can't wait though.

@malfred

suppose to be the good ones. like Jon, Daenyris (sp?), Bran, Tyrion, Arya and that missing finger guy.

I'm pretty sure that Dany and Jon Snow are key parts. Other than that, I cant remember.

I bet there is a wiki to answer that.

Huh. When I see it, I'll worry about rereading. Unfortunately, the audio books use a narrator I don't care for.

The biggest problem with Ice & Fire, I think, is that George hasn't gotten to the story yet - he's still arranging pieces before he starts on the part he WANTS to tell - ice zombies invading & dragons defending.

I am so stoked for this book and delighted to read that news. I just got the 4th, and discovered that the series has no real conclusion, and so got stuck on the first few pages. I can't move forward unless I know there will be, at some point, closure.

Heh, while this is great news, i'm more excited about the HBO series at the moment. There is still 2 more more books in the series and he's not getting any younger. I didn't enjoy the 4th book as much as the previous series, but it looks like i'll have to re-read it cause i have no idea what happened in it.

The latest trailer was released for the HBO series and i spewed in my pants!!

Fun fact: This isn't the last book. It runs concurrently with the 4th.

When I get the book i'll be a happy believer. I am a bit wary of the TV series. I'm scared it will ruin it.

PUMPED!!!! I can't believe it's taken so long, but I'm excited to have a show to watch and a new book to read at the same time

HBO usually does quality stuff. I really don't see it being another "Legend of the Seeker - Sword of Truth" catastrophe. Great Scott, that was awful.

About friggin time! That fat bastard better stop hugging tigers and finish that book!

HBO series is likely to rock, but, since I already know what happens, I am more interested in the new book!

Thanks for the news!

Just placed my pre-order on Amazon, but I will feel better when it shows up on my door.

In the meantime, I generally love HBO series and am looking forward to their take on it.

Hopefully the series will do well and will force Martin to finish the books before the HBO series catches up to him.

Hah. I never made all the way though book 2. I recall that it started getting corny (in a trying-to-be-serious way). I also have problems with long unbroken stretches of tedious story line. I prefer the ADD approach - Each chapter changes story line and POV.

Though, to be fair - the Legend of the Seeker TV series completely mauled the original story. I watched the first episode... and gave up on it right then. It was epically bad.

Meh. I liked the first books...Fantasy with magic as rare and bad. But the last one just threw away everything that was good and pretty much forecast the rest of the plot.

I won't spoil it for anyone but if you've read all the current books you probably don't need to read the rest.

It's not too bad if you skip over the excessively I AM JOHN GALT aspects of the later books. Can't recall watching the series, but yeah, I heard horrible things.

2nd season was better.

I don't know if I want to commit to waiting another 10 years for the next book.

I'd much rather have some fun decent reading that comes out often like Dresden Files.

@ender Really? You're worried about spoiling a book that came out over 5 years ago?

Thankfully, I really don't see this happening. GRRM has been involved with the TV series a good bit of production, and has an extremely high opinion of the result. And I am just ecstatic to have an actual publication date, even if it is in July.

Also, for fans of the series, I feel I should plug Dark Sword Miniatures' excellent line of A Song of Ice and Fire models.
