@Meangreenstompa +others: The warp is unlimited sure but it is not a one for one rip of 'Hyperspace' from star trek etc. There is no 'Flow' in the warp to travel on without souls, the warp is described as a swirling river of emotions etc. If you travel outside the bounds of the river you will be 'becalmed' (pre- steam Naval term, stuck in the ocean without any wind to escape), you could keep pootling 'forward' but you would not get very far outside. I suppose if the old ones had built a webway to another galaxy. Though i reckon this is the only possible form of Intergalactic warp transit. You are thinking of Hyperspace/infraspace which is a pseudo-theoritical sliver of energy dividing two parrallel universes. It is hinted the Necrons travel this way so i guess advanced humans might have given it a go.

Alternatively, they may already have been destroyed by the advancing Tyranids for example? Or other xenos races?
Doubtful, if I recall correctly these other Human empires in Milky Way are technologically advanced even more than the Tau. Not even Tyranids could defeat them in that way, they would have just to advanced technology to battle with.
What do you mean "if i recall correctly"? As far as i know there has been nothing written on other galaxies apart from a short piece wheere a probe sent to the edge of this galaxy recieved ork transmissions supposedly from outside this galaxy.
I'm pretty sure that there is fluff about Macharius encountering a highly advanced human civilization.

The warp is unlimited yes. Though where there is no worship and sentience there is no connection. The warp is everywhere but without sentience it has no effect in certain areas.

The Adrantis Union for example, or the Red Technocracy. They were all defeated, however, by his tactical genius and the sheer number of troops he had under his command. Sadly, AFAIK, nothing was recovered from these conquered civilizations since as they putted up the biggest fights, the conquests of their worlds often seemed to end up with an exterminatus; or the imperial war machine simply hammered their worlds until nothing was left of their civilizations and tech. The Adrantis Union, for instance, ended getting smashed by a comet pulled out of its orbit by Macharius. A bit like the dinosaurs actually.

"How many more worlds do we sacrifice? How many more millions or billions do we betray before we turn and fight?" - attributed to Captain Leoten Semper of Battlefleet Gothic - Gothic War, the evacuation of Belatis.
If commanding a Titan is a measure of true power, then commanding a warship is like having one foot on the Golden Throne - Navy saying. |

Realms of Chaos: The Waking of the Warp p174
The warp is an alternative universe composed entirely of psychic energy generated by the thoughts, emotions and emotional activity of living beings. To a degree it is also generated by the life - force of even the simplest of living creatures, such as plants and small animals. The warp is the spiritual reflection of the life of the entire universe, and for this reason it is sometimes called the sea of souls. The warp, the Sea of Souls and the Realm of Chaos are one and the same thing.
