It would have to be one of the Eisenhorn novels by Dan Abnett. Possibly Malleus.
Have only read "Mechanicus" in the HH series, couldn't finish "flight of the Eisenstein" - it was as tedious to me as lord of the rings was.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...
... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

I think Gaunt's Ghosts. Somehow IG books give a human take on life in the 40st millenium.

Came out a year or two ago. Aaron Dembski-Bowden wrote it. He has since written Helsreach and Soul Hunter. He's considered one of the best BL writers for how few books he's written.
ADB wrote it? Cool! I'm definitely going to look for a copy.

Space marine, best one-ever! Ian Watson wrote a masterful novel bringing to life the very dark nature of being a marine in the 40k setting, I make a habit of reading it once a year.

Considering IG are your average humans, I think the "somehow" is kind of redundant here.

Not exactly avergae human. The average is probably working his/her life away in some mines/manufactoria or in a gang somewhere. The individuals in the Guard are probably 1 in 10000.
