I love Storm troopers been playing them for 3 editions,They are more dangerous now than before.I usually take them. to take out soft targets for my I.G. Armor Spearhed.Of coursre i always field three ten man squads. All i can say is we play cut throat 40 k and i retired them at 10-0.The only thing that really gave me a hassle was them drop marine armies.Death to the Heretics! I cannot wait til i finally get some platic ones.

Woa ... three ten-man squads? That's pretty pricy. What points level do you play at?

I was quite happy when Stormies came out in this codex with the upgraded hot shot lasguns which actually 'do' more than the standard lasgun. I didn't take them in 3rd ed because I was short on cash but I bought two units in 4th and was planning a 3rd unit. Now 5th ed is here and I found Ogryns a better choice for my third elite slot. Guard can never have too much of a good thing but when you have three units performing the same very niche roles you have to call it a day. I've just done a major shift around in my list and the Storm troopers havn't changed one bit. They work as they are so there is no need to change them. One 10 man unit infiltrating with plasma, a second 5 man unit deepstriking melta.
What I have found odd is that I use the 10 man unit more than the 5 man DS. It's because I take a Manticore most games and I still can't get my head around how powerful the damn thing is. It's about 3 games old and has 4 Land Raiders and a tank shocked skimmer under it's belt already. 2 LR's its first game and then when it was out of ammo It rammed a skimmer. Thats a lot for a 160pts piece of artillery. I've found it more reliable to use the Manticore than the Melta DS for those high AV ratings. Downside to the Manticore is it's anti infantry skills against meq's are questionable.

Statistically, you will almost certainly die when assaulting a well-maintained fortress with a competent commander. You must strive to make your death useful.
Your foe is well equipped, well-trained, battle-hardened. He believes his gods are on his side. Let him believe what he will. We have the tanks on ours.

I should think infiltrating meltas are better in guards then in csm, since the guards own people out of a transport.

You can't infiltrate the transport can you?
