I find Facebook (and Twitter) makes me hat eht people I know as opposed to endear them to me. I really, really don't give a crap about everything they like and most of the comments that shoot for profundity land far off the mark. It makes you realize just haw dull and uninspiring people in general are when they try to talk all the time.

There are some good things about Twitter.

I really don't understand the disdain. I'm feeling a vibe not entirely unlike Twilight-hate I have some friends I've met in real life from Facebook, not counting having gotten laid or just engaging in hilarious back and forth. I'm not sure that just it's existence should inspire some sort of repulsed reaction.

...I've glanced at my Missus facebook (yes she has one...but then again she watches Jersey Shore as well) when she's on it and just shake my head at most of the post I've read.." Little Suzy went to the dentist today...Boy did she cry,LOL"...who gives a flying feth?...Did an alien life form slither out of little Suzies mouth and devour the dentist?...Did the Dentist decide he'd made a terrible career deccesion and leap from the window?...No?....then why would you assume anyone cares what happened to you and you bawling offspring during a routine dental visit??

Don't know about twitter but FB is a half assed decent way to keep up on organizing activities, but its like yahoo groups, and chatboards before it.

Yea I didn't like the friend thing. I've never added someone from that.

As soon as I'm done sorting out roommates for college, I'll probably delete my current Facebook. Too much accumulated gak from 8th-10th grade preceding the past two years of disuse.

Of course the opposite is true. It's mere existence isn't something to rejoice and bask in either.

I don't personally hate it but I do find it encourages navel gazing and a high signal to noise ratio of banality. It isn't the only way to chat online so it isn't unique in that aspect either. It doesn't do much that email doesn't really already do, but it does have crappy games with micro transactions that you can bother people with. It has its uses but is the low tier of human interpersonal communication. It cheapens the word friend (it isn't alone in this) and doesn't really create more than a superficial community. Of course for those who are mainly looking for superficial communities and half thought out aphorisms, it is a wonderful tool.

I can't be arsed with twitter; what happened to the good old days where you had to work hard to stalk people?

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Excerpt from "Seeress of Kell", Book Five of The Malloreon series by David Eddings.

I'm not sure what you mean. I think we all thought a question of how people feel about a given thing would lead to people discussing wither they like or dislike it to varying degrees. So I guess everyone else though the discussion would lead here. If it somehow turned into a discussion of subsurface agricultural subsidies there would probably be a reason for surprise.

Huh. I have Facebook open in the tab right beside Dakka...

It's something everyone uses that they can talk to their friends with online with, which is useful when you consider that talking on the phone and texting costs money. Not to mention I can do it while I'm doing other things. Like checking Dakka.

I think saying everyone is a huge overstatement and last I checked internet isn't free to most homes, especially high speed internet, often more then basic cell phone and unlimited text service.

But if you're going to be paying for your internet, you're going to have it no matter what at that flat rate (insert grumbling about horrible Canadian ISPs here). In the case of phones, especially cellphones (only you old codgers use landlines anymore!), talking and texting costs money.

Additionally, typing on a keyboard is miles better than typing on a phone's little keypad.

$50 (or whatever) a month for internet service is still more than $0 a month, which goes to refuting your original argument that it is free.

AIM and Yahoo IM are also both 'free' and provide the same ability to chat, so I'm not seeing the beautiful snowflake argument of why Facebook above any other service, excluding that David Fincher didn't make an movie about the other services.
