They can eat carbon over a period of time, but it is not recommended as it can cause gall diamonds.

Space marines eat anything slower then they are or anything in weapon range.

But they taste like chicken!
and Sace Marines ha ve an organ which can break down and derive nutrition from anything they consume. They can also use what they consume to track a foe, tracking them entirely byu taste. As it claims on the "making a space marine" page on the lexicanum

I think I read somewhere on Lexicanum that they were starting to starve before their rescuers arrived.

"Normal" top athletes have trouble eating enough for their really heavy activities like Iron Man competitions and such.

A Space Marine is taller, heavier and massively more muscular and spends a lot of waking hours in physical activity. He's also expected to stay sharp in combat for days on end. He will either eat concentrated nutrient goop or spend hours dining every day.

They were subsisting on the reclycling mechanisims their armor has/that would have been present in the underground bunkers.

the Reclycling mechinisims simply turns their Body wastes(Solid and liquid) into tasteless paste and water.

as long as they can keep the suits charged they could live indefinitly.

they also must have had some ration packs on their person when the planet got bombed. it can't just be bolt rounds and grenades in those belt packs.

But space marine anatomy is incredibly efficient, while human efficiency is crap, have you seen how much you leave in the toilet?

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Normally they eat a nutritious paste created from their own recycled refuse IIRC.

It's icky and a lot of Marine players try to gloss over that, but frankly it's pretty much how the entire world works anyway (refuse is recycled and used by plants, which are eaten by animals, which are killed, cleaned, cooked, and eaten by humans, who have more refuse, that goes to be used by plants eventually) only condensed into a few mechanical steps.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Except for the massive Titan, and the various surviving Space Marines, and the ruined buildings, and the wrecked vehicles, and the....

The entire planet is not turned to ash. If it was, they wouldn't have much to stand on. Underneath the ash there's earth and rock for them to eat. It's easy to assume (without unnecessarily dwelling on the subject by wasting ink on it) that Loken & Co. were able to sustain themselves on the rocks and dirt that was left over from the bombing. Hell, they could probably even take chunks out of the ruined buildings and eat it; it's got minerals in it.

Going on a tangent involving Loken gorging on rocks before the great battle ahead does not make for exciting reading. However, that doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Spoiler:
In Galaxy in Flames they get marooned on Istvaan for 3 months with nothing
and also I think they mention in Brothers of the Snake too that they technically need to eat.

Well, as i didn't read the book - were they active all this time? As SM bodies can do some neat tricks like anabiosis etc. And - average people can starve up to six weeks(but recovery will be a struggle) if they have water (which SM PA will definitely have since Mark 2).

In Brothers of the Sanke a lady asks Priad for a glass of water. He's quite taken aback by the very idea of even carrying rations let alone water. Even though he's a a solitary mission that may take months. In that conversation on an unrelated topic he mentions how one year is a brief period of time. From that I would say Astartes can go many, many months without food or even water.
