Basically it sounds like an autocannon is roughly equivalent or slightly stronger than the MK-19 Grenade Launcher, which for those who don't know, is a machine gun that can fire grenades in excess of 2000m with decent accuracy. Below 2km you get better accuracy, but it can launch one consistently up to 2.5km altogether.... it also has a pretty good fire rate of about 300-350 grenades per minute, so it can lay down some impressive explosive fire, provided you have that much ammo for it!!!

Autocannons are basically 30-40mm cannons. like the modern auto-cannons found on the US's current IFVs.

the Mk-19 is more like a Heavybolter(large exploding rounds fired in a way similer to a machine gun with a flat trajectory as opposed to being a grenade launcher which lobs exploding projectiles over verticle obsticles)

the Mk-19 is only called a grenade launcher because it fires exploding projectiles, but aside from that it has very little in common with other man portable grenade launchers.

Actually, the MK-19 is just like the M203, in that you base the distance fired on the arc of the projectile, so it is similar to a grenade launcher in that aspect. However, unlike the M203, it can get a respectable distance in a straight line shot without the need for a trajectory shot.

Edited cause I'm too slowed to spell launcher correctly!

Well, all ballistic weaponry is based on an arc.

some weapons have a shallower arc then others, but the MK-19 is certaintly mostly used as a direct fire weapon.

This is true, but mostly because we let them get close so we can see the look on their face before we blow up the car bomb they are driving!!

Have you seen the film Avatar? remember those mechas used by the humans and their massive machine-guns? Well, that's how an autocannon function IMO. A relatively low rate of fire (4-5 rounds/sec) compared to light weapons with a 30mm caliber (and no explosive rounds normally).

I believe a Mk 19 can't really be compared to a heavy bolter. While a heavy bolter could use a 40 mm caliber (seems to be a bit too big IMO), it seems to have a smaller explosive fire, but a MUCH, much higher rate of fire. Probably 20 rounds per second. IIRC, the Mk 19 can only fire 5-6 rounds per second.

I only recall Bragg holding a heavy bolter, not an autocannon which is a larger weapon.

I am sure I read in the Gaunt's Ghost series that Bragg used an autocannon.

IIRC, it is even one of his favorite weapons.

I also recall him using, not only an autocannon, but a makeshift twin-linked autocannon! It's ok though he never hit anything.

Of course not :0)

Only orks can duct-tape together several heavy weapons and hope to hit anything...

Waiiit a minute... did I just say Orks had a hope of hitting anything ?

Yes, but normally Bragg has BS 2 but when he tapes two autocannons together he goes down to BS 1. Of course he gets rerolls though

autocannons were described as being equivalent to the between 30 and 40mm rapid-firing light cannons in use in today's militaries.

Like a Bofors 40mike.

I'd like to see the hulk that can man-pack a Bofors.

Strike that, I'd rather not see him and simply gank his ass from orbit with a lance strike.

Indeed. This is a heavy bolter, but you get the idea:

Even with "future materials" the IG heavy weapons from the kit do mostly look far too big, they also stick out too far over the edge for efficient storage.

Rather than cut them down I use the weapons from the sentinal kit with my heavy weapons teams. I think they look allot more inscale, big but inscale.

I'll link a picture is I can find one.

I used the stubber from a chimera kit as a one-man autocannon, with a guy carrying his ammo, I can see him carrying it round easily enough, but Im not gonna get involved with the caliber argument.
