I play Menoth, so lets say I take a vanquisher, and Amon Ad Raza. I could use a jack with higher speed, but he also has an AOE 4 ranged weapon with continuos fire, so it gives me options(if only he has assualt!) I cast mobility on him, that gives me a 9" charge/trample range, usually more than enough to get the job done, and if they bunch up, pow with that boosted AOE attack.

I see your points, I just don't think they out weigh the effectiveness of this tactic. If trample was the only option, maybe i'd rethink, but I always try to put myself in situations with multiple options. Like the trample/aoe strategy. It alows you to react to your enemies move. And one viable option is Trample!

Except both trample and aoe's are mainly effective when the target IS bunched up. A sufficiently spread out target is extremely resistant to both.

In this case trample is to get at a model you don't have line of sight too though, not to kill tons of models at once, so bunching up works against it.
