I just think it is funny that some people rage against Ward's great crimes against 40k and most of them aren't even talking about his work.

Although I still think that the rage against BA and GK is more OTT than the 'great injustices' done by the book.

Nothing is wrong with the codexes (Maybe the Grey Knights and SoB thing) and if you look at the fluff, it all makes sense.

Luna, this is not a fight you're going to win. I recommend finding a nice Female Space Marine thread or something. Those are generally more civilized than any thread where Ward was invoked.

yeah anything makes sense in sci-fi if you say that it was there was this one super special circumstance that can never be duplicated but happened because I say it did.

Considering how much backwards reasoning, inside-out talk, and wacky diddly-doo justifications we need to come up with to make his fluff kinda-sorta make sense leads me to believe he isn't a very good writer.

As a counter: no one really had any major issues with Phil Kelly's work on the DE, his fluff was cool, left room for expansion by players and future writers, and kept the theme of the DE intact. All while moving them forward without breaking the lore.

Matt Ward has a hard time doing that, or at least doing it without raising eyebrows.

Like Kurgash said, in the world of WHFB (you know, the other major Warhammer system? The one with medieval stuff and magic? It's been going for longer than 40k... still nothing?) Daemons of Chaos ruled 7th edition like a pimp rules his bitches, with hard pimp slaps going out to anyone who stood up to them.

Not a lot could pull out a win unless they were tailored specifically towards them (list tailoring isn't as common in WHFB as 40k, and it's rarely ever necessary due to the relative balance), and even then they had a hard time. Their spellcasters dominated, their melee slaughtered whatever they touched, they were the epitome of overpowered.

Now in 8th they've been taken down a few pegs, but the fact that they were released early/mid-7th with 7th edition in mind makes you wonder what the hell Matt Ward was smoking thinking when he wrote it.

Mat Ward is disliked because he is a terrible writer. Reading the new GK codex people might think he was taking the piss.

Most of his fluff, even if it's a bit too silly, is justifiable. The bit where Necrons, who hate all life, team up with Blood Angels to fight Tyranids makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Also his naming conventions are awful - Nemesis being before every GK weapon, and Blood being before every Blood Angels weapon. Maybe it's just a bid to keep things different so the world doesn't have three different kinds of Storm Shields again, but I doubt it.

A lot of this is just the very vocal minority crying out how much they hate Mat Ward. He hasn't overtly fethed up anybody's army list, and his 40k books haven't been stupidly over or underpowered. I don't like how he writes, and a lot of his rules are a bit silly, but if you look back at Codex: Space Marines, it's a damn good book. Lots of choices on how to build your army, special characters who aren't overpowered or stupidly under/overpriced, and most of the fluff (aside from ULTRAMARINES AM BESTEST FOREVER) is decent. If he just got reined back in a bit, he could be a decent enough codex writer. As is he's just getting a bit too wacky for his own good, and I fear his next book will reach some kind of singularity of poor fluff and naming conventions.

I think you'll find thats quite subjective person to person. From what I am reading over the past number of months as the Ward hate has grown stronger, I would say those who do care about the background are finding some of his stuff particularly hard to stomach, as, just as with a few other writers who have come along over the years, it seems that he is not being as respectful to some of the background material that goes back over the various editions.

In fact I would guess the hate on average will burn brighter the longer you have been in the hobby with an interest in the background and overall story. Now I have no idea if thats a team call, or as I've noted in several White Dwarf articles over the years, the Writer of a Codex goes and fills a lot of details in on his own once the intial brainstorm session is over. I think there is an issue to be answered if someone comes in and just starts changing things to make things cool, certainly a recent Jervis Johnston column about killing your darlings should be taken to heart by mr Ward Asap.

I'd also say there seems a worrying trend of the some of the most dedicated folks to the settings have been slowly leaving over the past ten years or so. Until War of the Ring I didn't even know this fella existed at GW, and few books in there are several things he seems to be doing that make me raise an eyebrow.

It's worrying, the last time I had a similar feeling was when Ethen Skemp was playing around with the WoD, and then we got the nwod as a 'reward' for his efforts. *shiver*

No I'm aware and frankly that would make all the hate coming his way more understanding but for a guy to make a Matt Ward thread, well aware of the giant amounts of disdain people have for him, asking obvious bait questions and using non logical defense to counter just screams of troll.
