I think the problem is plain to see. PP has no creativity left. Warmachine never had very much, and by now they've run completely dry. The excuses to release marginally different warjack options have gotten increasingly thin, the army lists ballooned into cancerously disproportionate proportions, bloated by useless entry after useless entry, filling every conceivable niche with massive redundancies.

Everything Privateer has done since Mk2 was released has reeked of creative desperation.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

I'll admit that the second Mk2 hit it looked glorious. The unit selection was great, and there wasn't anything that was TOO dumb (Bar Retribution)

It does seem like they're pulling out any idea that they think works, and I'm really getting sick of the needless new character 'jacks...

While ya'll may complain, I think it's worth mentioning that even if it's not "THE MOST CREATIVE THING EVER!"...At least they are releasing stuff for all factions. We're not stuck with years of the same models, same broken rules that are different from the core rules, and bad over priced crap.

PP resculpts the over priced crap and tries to get things so it's all balanced. At least we have releases across all factions, that's awesome instead of working with 1-3 year old rules.

True, but I mean a lot of it is really unnecessary and/or repetitive...

Sure, GW doesn't do it right, but PP's system isn't perfect... and it's kinda pulling the game in a weird direction, IMHO. Khador already has 3 or so character 'Jacks, do they really need more?

i find myself wondering if they hope to eventually have 1 character jack per caster perhaps

@cryonicleech

the answer to your question is

Yes. at least 1 character jack per warlock

If that's the case...

I mean, seriously, it was cool to see maybe 1-2 Character 'Jacks per faction, it made them seem cool and they were easy to spot. Now, it feels less special to field them if we're just going to get crap like this all the time.

Hordes is, IMHO, a lot better off right now, but we'll see...

Character Jacks have been around, at least in fluff and campaign rules from the beginning. Jacks have always developed quirks in their cortexes that gave them certain personalities depending on their age and how often a specific 'Caster would use them. Original Jack bonding rules were in campaigns in Prime Mk1, IIRC. They may have been introduced in Escalation if they weren't in Prime.

Character Jacks are just an extension of the original Jack bonding system and the fluff. They're an upgrade kit if you want them, nothing says you have to get them. They're not game breaking for that very reason, so one doesn't feel they have to get them to feel competitive. Personally, I like the system as it allows more customization in theme forces if you want to and changes the look of the basic chassis a bit too.

Seriously I don't know why people are bitching about Warmachine being unoriginal when their main competitor's game has 6 armies that have almost identical models make up the majority of their lists.

Not liking models is an opinion and totally valid but saying that PP has never had any creativity in an industry ripping of Tolkien (or Tolkien IN SPACE) for 30+ years is absurd.

As compared to who? For one thing PP hasn't even begun to mine their background, gobbers are still at the very margins of the lists, there are more monsters than you could shake a stick at in the monsternomicon that haven't shown up even if you exclude the fae and infernals...

I dunnow... the Scavenger is pretty nice new direction, as is the Ragman... I love the steampork army from Hordes: Minons, - I think the plastics did a bit of a favor at least for the heavies, in that they worked against the ridicouly top heavy proportions they'd had before... (particularly with the Khador Jacks) and with the new character jacks, having them as bit's packs means you could build em off the older chassis if you wanted to... As for the warjack options, unless they toss over their entire design system, and go to GW's "buffet of options" I don't see how else they'd release them...

<Rarity> I am not whining, I am complaining! Do you want to hear whining?

Thiiis is whiiiiining! Oooo, this mini is too expeennsive! I'm' going brrookee! Can't you make it cheaper? Oh, it's resin and not metal anymore! Why didn't you take it off the sprue first? That's gonna leave a pour spout, and the FLGS is so far away, WHY DO I HAVE TO SUPPORT IIIIIIIT?! </Rairty>

This is a false choice. There are more options then simply a choice between "broken rules with years between releases" and "bland, uninspired models that all look the same".

Would Choice A be more accurately summed up as "bland, uninspired models that all look the same with broken rules and years between releases?"

@sourclams

let it go man. I mean its a valid criticism. I mean if you purchase an add-on of 2-5 pieces it is entirely reasonable to expect it to totally change the look of the model its based on.

models that share the same chassis for fluff reasons

models that convery a deliberate design aesthetic

models that...

yeah i give up

Yes, it is too bad that PP can't bring the scale of diversity to Warjacks that GW has achieved with Sapce Marines...

It's just so damn hit or miss for me. I see the were-gators/were-turtle and think "Well there's my Horde army!". Then I see something uninspired like this and yawn.

Those gators ROCK! I was tempted to buy them, but I really, really, Really need to assemble and paint the massive trollblood force I bought first...

You can snicker if you want, but I will applaud Games Workshop on really fleshing out the Space Marine line. They come in all sorts of colors, red, black, yellow, blue, whatever.
