I have my libbie in dante's honor guard so it drops without scattering so my libbie is practically breathing on the unit haha. I can see it being unreliable in other cases thou.

Yes he would be but then because you shot that unit is going to die with plasma guns melta guns etc demishers that unit cannot hope to doo enough damage Dante is grossly misused you don't drop Dante (225 points) plus what ever he is with (mostlikely 200+ points) in range of all the big guns with no hope of cover DoA is not a cake walk.
Also Dante is not worth taking in under 2k gamrs because his mask dosnt really put a big dent in the generic hq's. He is also not eternal warrior so you fail that invul and he's dead same goes for force weapons zap.
Stick with a librarian he is the best all round he buffs protects comes with a power/force weapon stock ws and bs 5 if I'm not mistaken and he gives you psychic defence ( his hood) that's more than most hq choices do for you at 100 points. I wouldn't mind giving up 1 tank and a couple guys to nuke that squad it's just not effective sorry to say.
If you want a character take mephiston he gives you what the librarian gives casts his 3 abilities ( wings rage and the str 10 one) he is a cc beast but he needs back up.
So overal stick with a lib till you get a good solid feel for the army then try characters.

You see taht's what i thought with dante, but i havent had him be entirely desminated as much as i would think, plus all the weapons they lay out on a FNP dante and command squad they dont go to the assault marines who are the real threat. I have also gotten rid of many nasty tanks with him.

I def think he seems like not a good choice, but once i tried him i had good results, thou not everyone will, by far the libbie is the best choice, and is a needbe in the army.

I would say at a 2k plus list take dante and a lib bust open his land raider or an expensive tank and just drop him alone break the tank open for example a land raider with assault termies other than being effective its mean. Then if they have a fancy character he gets a debuff and there you go paid for himself and made assault termies walk and get massive small arms fire
