So as I've said, does anyone have anymore ideas as to what would cause a company to do this. Also I'm trying to figure out what shade of red to use, I'm going to do a black base coat with a layer of grey to make it easier for white but I can't decide on the shade of red I should use.

I'd think Blood Red would be very striking.

Maybe Mechrite or Blood Red base coat (or Army Painter Pure Red or Dragon Red if spray-priming red), then Baal Red or Devlan Mud wash, then straight Blood Red highlight and mixed blood red/orange highlight.

I think it would be cool to do a vengeful White Scars army, however I think that there could be some tweaks that would make your fluff standpoint much better.

For starters, I think it would be cool to have a small force painted red symbolizing they lost their Khan. However if you decide to develop the force even more a small force painted red(those who lost their Khan) inside of a larger "normal" White Scars force painted in the traditional colors would be very cool. Like they lost their Khan and so many of their fighting force that they had to be accepted in by another Khan and they're looking for vengeance. I also think it would be a cooler "fluffy" background if your dead Khan died by the hands of some daemon or Ork Warboss, so they're fighting through the galaxy on a long Hunt looking for one daemon or Ork or whatever.. Idk seems compelling to me.

Things I thought of in a nutshell:

-You could do the "Red" marines with a White Scars shoulder pad so they seem more unified within the force
-"Red" marines could have attached shields and other "Hun" type stuff to help distinguish they're veterans and have been on many hunts EDIT: Space Wolf parts would look awesome

I think a nicely done red section of your army nicely accented with shields and other trophies would be a cool centerpiece to your army, and would play quite cool by itself.

Just my two cents, hope it helps.

Hm so more of a standard red as the base color instead of a darker shade. I've done the Blood Red base with a Devlan Mud wash when I was painting a friends Chaos Knights for him and it turned out pretty well. I think I'll try 2 test models one with this scheme and one using a Scab Red base with a Devlan Mud wash and then a Scorched Brown/Scab Red highlight to give them a more gritty and dirty look, I'm leaning towards representing the company as gritty hunters so I'll see if I like the darker or lighter shade of red better.

I really like Marzooky's idea of including some clean white elements, like a single shoulder pad, or the occasional shield, or something. White/red is an awesome contrast.

@Marzooky: Expanding on what had been suggested I'm thinking fluff wise that the company had recieved a request for aid from a Imperial world but it was a trap set by the Alpha Legion. The AL seeded the world with cultists which over time turned the world to Chaos or at least a large portion of it, then a distress signal was sent to lure an astartes force to the planet so they could kill them and take the geneseed. The Brotherhood arrives thinking they are there to help fight off a CSM invasion but find themselves facing Alpha Legionairres and traitor PDF regiments. They fight their way free but their Khan (as well as others) are lost, because of the slight and the company swears a Blood Oath to hunt down those who betrayed them and paint their armor red to signify their oath untill they have hunted down those responsable.

- falling to Chaos
- being sent on a penal crusade for whatever real or perceived slight to the Imperium/Inquisition
- fighting on a planet where it rains red paint
- actually being Alpha Legion disguised as White Scars but got the colours wrong
- having all their white paint stolen by Blood Ravens (who now consider it a chapter relic)

Perhaps one of the less well known geneseed mutations is mass colourblindness?

And who's going to tell a hundred 8ft tall armoured super warriors that, excuse me, sir, that pot of paint isn't white, it's red and.... no, never mind....

but the color scheme sounds awesome, I like the idea of including original colored wargear and or relics, no one is going to repaint the scared whatever of someone.....

In the end if ya just like the name paint em whatever and call it a day. If your lookin for back ground, they're white scars for a reason (other than the name or their pant scheme. I'd suggest lookin at the different established chapters or messin with yor own color scheme.

Maybe make up some story about them having kind of an off the grid special unit. Not quite a successor chapter just maybe an unsung force they use for assassinations or covert stuff they like speed why wouldnt they like stealth. Maybe it's the unit they use specifically to hunt chapter enemies. Maybe not actually kill em just find out where the target is active. Report back and wait for reinforcements by running sabotage missions so the target can't escape.

Some one will inevitably poop on this but it's just some brain storming. Use it or don't , just remember to have fun with it.

I had a white scars army years back and the white is nice, but it is pretty striking on the table with all the bikes/vehicles.

If I were to do it again, I would paint them in an earthy brown color with red and white details. Add in some wolf pelts and other details to make it look like they live on their mounts and I think it could turn out to be a really cool nomadic hunting force and be true to their real-world mongolian roots.

I like the White Scars for their color scheme and the fact that they are a quick attack force but I can`t stand their tribal marking on their armor. Particularly the indented (dancette) lines on their boots and vehicules. I would go for a more tribal look such as Maori or tribal style tattoo. But then that might look a little too much like Chaos.
And checking the old Warhammer 40k stuff, the White Scars where originally red with a white shoulder pad.
