It seems oddly fitting and at the same time pretty tragic...

What about the 'Knights of Blood'?
Says in the Blood Angels codex that they were declared Renegade but are being allowed to help fight off the Leviathan Tyrannid fleet and Ka'Bandha Daemon army.
Bah I don't know, Imperium just does what it want's when it suits them it seems

Never could a chaos space marine become a normal space marine as when someone turns from the God Emprorer's light the shall be purged with righteous fire. Remember :
Kill the Mutant.
Burn the Heretic.
Purge th Unclean.
Also if you see a daemon run for your fething life. The Emprorer Protects

Yeah, there has been conflicting fluff on the issue. Brazen Claws had turned traitor at one point, but are now considered staunchly loyal the the IoM.

well the KoB have been declared renegade due to their instabillity and excessive violence on the battlefeild causing way too much colateral damage. While the IoM has declared them renegade they do not view themselves as renegade therefore still attempt to help the IoM, when Dante requested the help of all BA succesor chapters they returned as well. The reason they take care not to fight alongside the other chapters is probably for the twin reasons of 1 they dont want to attack any of their fellow BA succesors in a rage and 2 they dont want the BAs honour to be questioned on their account by being part of the same actions with them.

There is no possible way for under normal or not normal circumstances can chaos space marines that have betrayed the imperium for a while to come back to the emperor. But I had an idea for a chapter that basically is a collection of marines of traitor legions that stayed loyalist and survived.

Rites of Battle Deathwatch RPG supplement introduces a Black Shield class, which essentialy is a marine on a penitent mission. It's hinted that it is the way to play your renegade or chaos redemptionist. A Black Shield removes all his chapter symbols and serves in the Deathwatch until he dies. Most of them are regarded with suspicion, although there exist accounts of Black Shields earning a position of power in the DW.

I was very surprised that nobody said that before you
But yes, it's not really a "return to the Imperium" so much as "Join the Deathwatch and hope nobody ever figures out you were a traitor".
And it's not really that Space Marine who was the traitor, rather he exiled himself from his original chapter rather than turn traitor with them.
Except they say he could be a renegade that returns wishes to repent, they say as much in the book. Makes me wanna write a Death Watch Black Shield Kill-Marine up.

Theres an old BL book called Eye of Terror. It's quite an interesting read a little far fetched (as some of the old BL stuff was).
