Was just flipping through the Taros campaign book (Operation Comet: Some of the best 40k fluff I have ever read), it was pretty well written. Is that the quality I can expect from all the IA?

Agreed, they have little fluff. But as a handy and inexpensive way to get lots of rules they work very well.
I find they make a good introduction to FW rules as the other IA books can be extremely hit-and-miss with regard to useful rules content.

Pretty much. The issue is that a lot of it has been broken up into multiple books.
Taros was their first experiment with that style, and it was generally regarded by FW as 'Meh'. It's huge, it's unwieldy, and if I were to smack someone with it I'd likely be charged with assault with intent to braindamage.
But the art, campaign style, and the like is pretty much that.

The writing is generally pretty good. IA8 lifts a bit too heavily from Blackhawk Down for my liking. IA4 is the one that I enjoyed the most by far.
Don't expect the Imperium to win though, you'll be sorely disappointed.

Even when the Imperium wins, they lose.

It'd be nice if they could, maybe, achieve some of their objectives before they get a good kicking? Just for the novelty value...

Well the next book is facing Eldar, so it might happen.

Yah, I guess they have Anti-Matt Ward at FW.

The real question is - will an Avatar get destroyed? (yet again) Or will FW portray it as tough and dangerous as it deserves to be?

Nah. Even Ward makes it clear that "the Imperium loses".
Draigo himself even exemplifies that, in the fact that all of his "wtfomfg" shenanigans in the Warp are instantly rebuilt.
FW just tries to make it clear that the Imperium is on the backfoot. I'm just waiting for them to get to the Black Crusade

Wait, loyalists won the Badab War? And the black Crusade?

I like to think of each Avatar as being a "different kind".
The normal itty bitty Avatar is basically a newly awoken Avatar, whose Young Prince was an Eldar who had no clue what he was doing.
The bad motha Avatar we see from FW is an Avatar awoken eons ago and maintaining a link to the real world through the sheer id of the Eldar consciousness.
And Eldrad. Automatically Appended Next Post: Happygrunt wrote:Wait, loyalists won the Badab War?
Definitely. Huron was overthrown and had to flee to the Maelstrom. He and the Astral Claws became the Red Corsairs after.
And the black Crusade?
This one is kind of a wash. Chaos didn't fulfill their main role(capturing the Cadian Gate and holding it so that they can constantly keep forces flowing all in one great big mass), but they do still have forces beyond the Cadian Gate wreaking havoc.

Happygrunt wrote:Alright, I am thinking that I might go ahead and pick up a book for imperial armor. My question is, whats inside one of these books? What am I paying for exactly? I play marines and IG, so the Badab war set looked promising, but what would my $100+ be paying for?
Might be useful but I wrote a short review of last IA book here:

They are really nice books to look at and read - I must admit not had much gaming from them but as inspirational pieces - very good.
