Subject: So what's in an Imperial Armour book?
|

Alright, I am thinking that I might go ahead and pick up a book for imperial armor. My question is, whats inside one of these books? What am I paying for exactly? I play marines and IG, so the Badab war set looked promising, but what would my $100+ be paying for?

In the case of Badab War, you aren't getting any IG stuff, it's all Space Marines. Badab War contains fluff about said war, and numerous Special Characters for use with your Space Marines Army as well as some scenarios, Apoc Spreeadsheets and the Tyrant's Legion and Siege Regiment Army Lists.

There's no 'new' IG stuff in the Badab War book, but there is IG stuff. The "Tyrant's Legion" is a blend of SM/ IG in one force.
As for "What's inside one of these books"...
Several different 'full color' spreads showing various stuff of the forces involved, color schemes, things like that. Descriptions and rules for whatever 'new' thing is introduced in there, and usually a campaign that involves the Imperial Guard getting slaughtered.

Say, I had a homebrew chapter. WOuld most of the things in this book be wasted on me then?

Not really. Some things simply say that an army "using the rules from X Codex can take Y".
Like Blood Angels can't take the new Land Raider Achilles, for example.

Well, sucks, as my marine army is blood angels.
There is Tyrnats legion right? Could you give me a quick example of what that army looks like? Is it marines as the elites choise and IG as troops?

First: *point and laugh* HAW HAW!
Now, for the other part...
There is Tyrant's Legion right? Could you give me a quick example of what that army looks like? Is it marines as the elites choice and IG as troops?
It's a combination of the two.
Your HQ choices are Lugft Huron(which can take a single Elites choice chosen from C: Space Marines as one of the army's Elites choices as well as the Honor Guard squad made eligible because Huron is a Chapter Master), Legion Centurion(a veteran Astral Claw Space Marines which is a compulsory HQ choice in any Tyrant's Legion army of 1500 points or more, regardless of the force allocation chart for the mission), and a Legion Auxilia Command Detachment(which is basically the exact options of a Command Squad).
Elites can take a 'Corpse Taker' which is an Apothecary with 2 Dissection Servitors, Renegade Marauder Squad(pirates which can take Hereteks, Murder Cultists, or Stalkers upgrade. They can take 'Brutes' which are pretty much Ogryn or anything like it), and the last option is Legion Retaliator Squad(chainsword/combat shielded Marines).
Troops are a Legion Space Marine Cohort and 1+ Legion Auxilia(a Conscript Squad), and lastly an Auxilia Armsmen Cadre (Guard Veteran Squad which can take an additional 10 Armsmen).
Fast Attack are an Iron Hunter Squadron( SM bikers), Hellhound Flame Tank Squadron, Legion Sentry Gun, and lastly Maelstrom Fleet Lighters(1-3 Arvus Lighters which can be used as transports and take various weapon loadouts).
Heavy Support is an Auxilia Battle Tank Squadron(Leman Russ variants), Auxilia Siege Defence Squadrons (Thunderer, Medusa, or Basilisk), Artillery Barrages (Bombard Strike, Basilisk Strikes, and Mortar Strikes), Auxilia Fire Support Cohort (mortar teams which can take various heavy weapons), Maelstrom Fleet Naval Detachments (Thunderbolts, Lightnings, and Vultures), Astral Claws Chapter Support(if a Space Marine Cohort is in the army, a Heavy Support option can be taken from Codex: Space Marines. The Heavy Support options taken cannot exceed the number of Cohorts in the army), and finally a "Heavy Ordnance Battery" which consists of immobile Earthshakers or Medusa Siege Guns.

And this list, which has taken its spot from Nids as my "Summer Project", is in Part One or Two? I mean, I am probably going to go for the boxed set, but it would be nice to know if this was early on released latter.
Whats nice is I still have the 5th edition marine codex, and this fits what I would like an Imperial Army to look like. Only wish sentinels were in fast attack.
Now, I assume that the transports and upgrades for thing from the IG and SM codex are the same? So Razorbacks, Rhinos and Chimeras?

It's in Part One, yes.
I'm not going to say anything more--but it definitely is more built off the idea of the 'early Imperium' armies

I'd actually suggest getting the two part set.
Buying it like that saves you 7 GBP(52 GBP for volume two, 45 for the first) and will save you some on shipping since you'd be charged the same on both.
If you don't like it, you'll be able to sell the two volume set easier than selling piecemeal.

Alright, it will just take longer for me. I can earn MAYBE 50 dollars every 3 weeks if the weathers good. I am really eager to try out the tyrants legion now, looks like a TON of fun.

The first part of the book is all fluff on a specific war, the war is told in high detail and reads like a history book.
The second part deals with fluff regarding vehicles of the combatants in that war (always Imperial vehicles then somebody else)
The third part has stats/rules that you'll need for Apocalypse Games. Also scenarios and blah blah.

The first Krieg book and beyond actually.
Anphelion Project was done before Apocalypse released, so there's no real 'Apocalypse' stuff in there. It was also done in kind of a different style as it was more of a 'narrative' of Inquisitor Lok's actions and done like that with notations and the like from him all throughout.
It's not bad but it's not great either There's still tons of Nid material in there.

I've never understood what the books are for besides apocalypse. Aren't you not allowed to use their rules otherwise unless someone is nice enough to let you? Or am I mistaken?
Dunno, I was interested in the Exorcists, but their only info is in Badab IA as far as I've heard. I wasn't sure which marine codex to base them on, or if I should make them GK. But then they'd look odd. Then I found out about IA and that there are special rules. But do they work in normal games? Or tournaments? Or in GW store events?
In short, IA completely confuses me and I wish I knew what it was.

Portaljacker wrote:I've never understood what the books are for besides apocalypse.
Campaigns, stories, reference material, etc. Apocalypse is a very small portion of the book, usually being an overcosted formation using something neat from the book.
Aren't you not allowed to use their rules otherwise unless someone is nice enough to let you? Or am I mistaken?
You can use the rules wherever and whenever you damn well please, just like you can use your Codex the same way.
Basically: there's a stigma attached to IA stuff where some people think it "requires permission". It doesn't. However, it's kind of a jerk move to just spring the stuff on someone without a bit of warning or not having the book/information readily available for them to look at.
Dunno, I was interested in the Exorcists, but their only info is in Badab IA as far as I've heard. I wasn't sure which marine codex to base them on, or if I should make them GK.
God no. The Exorcists are really just 'normal' Space Marines with a twist(they know how to fight Daemons). They've got no special equipment or training, or anything of that nature to make them warrant being based off GK or any unique Codex beyond Space Marines(vanilla). There's not really an army list on them, but there's a special character.
But then they'd look odd. Then I found out about IA and that there are special rules. But do they work in normal games? Or tournaments? Or in GW store events?
Most tournaments don't allow them simply because people are unfamiliar with them and there'd be whining if it was allowed.
In short, IA completely confuses me and I wish I knew what it was.
In short?
Awesome.

So treat them as supplements like any other codex or expansion book unless something newer contradicts them? Where do I look to find out what's inside them, like what there are rules for and such, short of pirating them of course, that would be an obvious but not very legal solution.

I know that most places allow the DKoK siege regiment list, only because using it shoots yourself in the foot.
My first Forge world purchase is now something like $200 US dollars. I have a long time until I can get it, but the badab war set and some forge world armor (Mk 4 power, my favorite) should be worth it.

Also because there's a PDF available for it
They're updating the stuff via PDF as it stands--which is nice. Both Krieg+Renegades have gotten that treatment.

IA4 (the nids book) is one of the best to read but virtually all of the rules have been superseded or re-printed elsewhere.
If you're looking for rules, the IA:Apocalypse books are much better value (two books, half the price of a regular IA book entirely full of rules) and have plenty of stuff that can be used in regular 40K. The two IA: Apoc books have the rules for everything up to IA7 and some stuff from IA8 (but no army lists).

Most of the stuff available for "free to download" from IA2 is just corrections/updates.
However, IA2 now has a 'updated' publication that's supposed to be out there. I'll be able to confirm when my copy arrives.

Pretty much spot on, but I wouldn't say IA: Apocalypse books are "much better value". Can't confirm but from looking at the sample spreads, they look more like "abridged gamer editions" than the fun full versions.

There are a number of entirely new units in IA2 - e.g. Land Speeder Tempest. Re IA:Apoc - Two books containing pretty much all the units from IA3-IA7 for the price of one regular IA book seems like better value to me. (also, IA2 has a list of all units that existed in 40K and Apoc at the time of it's printing and notes the book(s) which have the most current version of that unit's rules. Extremely useful!)
