My dice are replaceable, while my minis aren't. Why, my current set of dice is just one more "1's across the board" roll away from being replaced by a couple of Yahtzee! boxes.

You're a cruel taskmaster, Doc. I take the more 'Papa Nurgle loves all his children' approach. Still, if it gets you resultes, there's something to be said for the Lord Commissar system.

When it misses that railgun shot.

However, it was serving the Greater Good, and as such, will be reeducated and retrained until it properly fulfills its task.

There are some who walk until their legs fail them and they fall to the ground. I find that respectable.
Then there are those who drag themselves further. I find that admirable.

In order to maintain performance and instill respect, you often smash your worst 2 performing dice in front of the others.

It serves and important lesson to them all...

... I don't smash bad die. Unless, of course, I'm feeling hungry... they offer up their souls to the dice god, and then I eat 'em.

In your base, ignoring your logic.

My friend finally got rid of one of his dice. He has color coded ones so he knows what they represent this one was representing his railgun, he kept shooting at my Leman Russ(even the side armor) and would penetrate but failed to do anything above a Crew stunned. After two 5 round games of the same results he decided to crush it in a vice grip.
