When they introduce the Tahoe, they are doing a bad thing? It's not good policy? It's amazing how detached from real life people get about this company and hobby.

Specialist Games created competition for themselves. Was that a bad policy? How about Forge World? Anything that increases revenue is a good idea. It seems to me that a large number of players (at least on this message board) would buy a digital version of the game and still continue the table-top version. Take a look at Vassal 40k, for example. How many people that play that mod have stopped the GW hobby?

Simple truth is, adding to their product line is a good decision. Opening a new revenue stream is not a bad idea. They aren't branching into new areas like, say, Games Workshop Strip Clubs or Grocery Stores...

Your example is flawed. Chevy coming out with a new SUV is like GW coming out with a new model kit. By making a computer game based directly on the tabletop game, people may end up favoring it over the actual miniatures game. Vassal is not terribly widespread, and it's a minority that plays it. I know a few people who do play it instead of real 40k though. Branching out into videogames like Dawn of War, Space Marine, and so on work fine, as they are distinct from the miniatures game while being in the same universe. GW will never make a direct adaptation of their tabletop game, as they know it's bad for business.

So it's more like Chevy coming out with a new Moped.

Only that doesn't work either, because there are those people who would buy a Moped, but not buy a car or truck, thus opening the company up to new revenue streams! Oh no!

Which is about the same thing with any sort of video game. It takes a very special sort of person to buy $1000 worth of models, $50 worth of paints and $10 worth of glue and other supplies, take the time to build, base and paint the models, and head to their FLGS each week in order to play. Every Jill and Joe with a computer is a potential customer for a computer game.

I actually know a few people who play Dawn of War and Warhammer Online, who wouldn't touch the model hobby with a ten foot pole.

I raise you to I know people who play DoW and WO and have no idea they are based off toy soldiers, and never even heard of the actual games.

Given the niche popularity of video games based on turn based table top games (that actually use the original game mechanics therefore DOW does not count), I dare say that an ultimate, end all port of 40k would not happen, not counting the other reasons stated in this thread.

At best we could probably hope for the release of another half decent skirmish based game that is truthful to 40k game mechanics. If such a game was able to translate 40k as well as D&D Tactics did for the D&D 3.5 ruleset, I’d be happy.

When I was reading this I was thinking how great of an idea it was, and wondering why didn't they do this earlier.

But then I'd realized that if they did make it, I'd be paying $35 for numbers, rather than plastic.

Pretty soon I'd be paying for air.

Hmm, let me think...

Ok.

Games-Workshop are not going to prevent a turn-based strategy game from being developed, because like the Dawn of War series, it's great exposure to the hobby for people who would have not known about it.

HOWEVER
Games-Workshop is not a computer games developer company, since you know, they lack games developers. They liscence their IP out to games development companies who want to use it for a computer game, e.g. Relic. There is no recent turn based strategy game simply because there simply isn't a market for it.

P.S
Can you come over to my house and spend a couple of weeks from your holidays spring cleaning my garage? Or are you going to be greedy and expect money for providing a service?

A turn based strategy game a bit like advance wars and their ilk for 40k could end up better than the actual game if made by a proper developer.

They can't have that.

If it were just 40k translated to a videogame, I'll stick to Blood Bowl.

The sink.

Funny, after I posted earlier I found that I can't play the 3rd mission in Chaos Gate - keeps crashing when I hit END TURN.

Anyway, if you want a turn-based 40k game, um ... wait for the 40k MMO and play it on a minimum specs computer.
