Casting my vote for Brite Touch general purpose primer. $3.50 at my local auto shop and goes on thin. I also use Krylon primer on occasion, as it tends to be fairly thin and the dark gray is almost indistinguishable from Adeptus Battlegray.

Just watch out. Not all auto primers are created equal. I've got two cans at home that I only use for terrain, as they will obscure details like none other.

£4 a can the size of a GW one Grey and white are both acceptable. Not had any problems with it.

Must admit I would like to try out some gesso primer.

I use Gesso frequently and would recommend giving it a try. The black primer works wonders for bringing out details. My experience with the gray and white primer is limited unfortunately.

Well, you may throw your rock and hide your hand
Workin' in the dark against your fellow man
But as sure as God made black and white
What's down in the dark will be brought to the light.
