I am not really excited about dropping 15.99 USD for a 10OZ can of primer. I personally think this is an insult to my sensibilities. I know Privateer Press has a decent primer for 1/2 the price, but unfortunately none of FLGS's carry it anymore. I used some other stuff I got at a local hobby store, that had a small business coolness to it, but the particulate is too large and can eliminate details even when sprayed lightly. Any help would be great!

Thanks in advance!

Army Painter. VERY good stuff, though not that much cheaper than GW's. MUCH better. I would personally recommend nothing else.

There was another thread on this exact topic in the past few days where they talk about using some cheap stuff from an auto store (krylon??) to good effect. Go back a few days and I am sure you will find it.

Ding Ding Ding - we have a winner. Seriously, you can't go wrong with this stuff. Also has great heat and humidity tolerance. It’s available in Black, White, and Grey.

I've been using a new P3 White Primer that my FLGS just started carrying. I personally love it. It's more tolerant of heat/humidity/human error and produces a great end product. Plus it's cheaper than GW's Primer

Yes, it's not actually primer, but I've been getting by just fine "priming" my models with the $0.99 cans from Walmart (what's the name? Colorplace or something like that?). Goes on thin, smooth, and matte (I've successfully used both white and black), with sufficient tooth for that all-important first layer of paint. Lots of others here have reported similar success and you really can't beat that price.

Sure, it doesn't bond quite as well as automotive primer might, but unless you're priming metal models that you plan to store in a running cement mixer, minis "primed" with plain old matte spray and hit with some varnish to seal hold up just fine.

I quite like using Mr.Hobby and Tamiya Light grey primer, they give a somewhat thinner and more fine coat then the GW ones.

I really like the .95 cent Wal Mart primer. Covers very well, leaves plenty of detail on the model, and the paint sticks to it very well

When I need need to prime my CRASSUS ARMORED ASSUALT TRANSPORT for painting, I tend to use the cheap wal-mart brand rattlecan primer. It gives good coverage and doesn't obscure any of the details of the CRASSUS ARMORED ASSUALT TRANSPORT. It's also pretty cheap at $1.50 a can, so the next time you need to paint a CRASSUS ARMORED ASSUALT TRANSPORT, try the wal-mart stuff.

It is the 3rd Millennium. For more than a hundred months Games Workshop has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Nottingham. It is the foremost of wargames by the will of the neckbeards, and master of a million tabletops by the might of their inexhaustible wallets. It is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with business strategies from the early Industrial Revolution Age. It is the Carrion Lord of the wargaming scene for whom a thousand veteran players are sacrificed every day, so that it may never truly die. Yet even in its deathless state, GW continues its eternal vigilance. Mighty battleforce starter-sets cross the online-store-infested miasma of the internet, the only route between distant countries, their way lit by a draconian retail trade-agreement, the legal manifestation of the GW's will. Vast armies of lawyers give battle in GW's name on uncounted websites. Greatest amongst its soldiers are the Guardians of the IP, the Legal Team, bio-engineered super-donkey-caves. Their comrades in arms are legion: the writing team and countless untested rulebooks, the ever vigilant redshirts, and the writers of White Dwarf, to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from other games, their own incompetence, Based Chinaman - and worse. To support Games Workshop in such times is to spend untold billions. It is to support the cruelest and most dickish company imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of sales discounts and Warhammer Fantasy Battle, for so much has been dropped, never to be re-published again. Forget the promise of cheaper digital content and caring about the fanbase, for in the GW HQ there is only profit-seeking, Space Marines and Sigmarines. There is no fun amongst the hobby shops, only an eternity of raging and spending, and the laughter of former employees who left GW to join better companies.

I'm using Krylon indoor/outdoor black primer. It went on smooth, is taking paint well, and didn't obscure any detail that I noticed, not to mention that it's $5 instead of $16(what do they think is in there... platinum?).

Well then, I think it's unanimous, using anything but GW Primer.

Oh, and for those times when you can use a spray primer, I recommend Gesso.

As far as the detail is concerned just about any primer technically will work, It's all in the nozzle, this controls particulate size and spray pattern.

I use this also. Works great for the price.

Honestly I really like GW primer the best, but it's just too expensive. I do have an arachnarok to paint, so I really want to pick up a can from GW, but can't make myself at the current price :/

Automatically Appended Next Post:
A couple tips for using spray cans:

If the area you live in is especially cold, you should warm up the paint. Do this by filling a small bowl with the hottest water from your faucet (not boiling!) and standing the can in it for 5 minutes. Shake before and after. It really helps the paint go on smooth.

Also, clear the nozzle when your done spraying. Nothing sucks more than using a can once and then the nozzle clogging! When you're done spraying, turn the can completely upside down and spray until only the propellant, with no paint, sprays out. Keeps your stream nice and even for the entire life of the can.

This..100%.
GW primer (like everything else they pedal) is way overpriced,a good auto primer like Duplicolor works great and cost much less.

I use an autoprimer from the local carparts store.
£4 a can the size of a GW one Grey and white are both acceptable. Not had any problems with it.

Must admit I would like to try out some gesso primer.
