The best place to start is here:

From there, you'll have to google folks' impressions of the demos at GenCon and the like.

In comparison to DW Leviathans is more refined when it comes to rules and the rules are way better designed/layouted. Spartan definitely needs an editor quickly. The rules are not that complex, but you have to go through text that wants to make it idiotproof and during proofing complicated the writing.

Everbody can write rules, the trick is to make them sleek and elegant and Leviathans definitely succeds in this department. Spartans rules get better with 2nd editions, but there really should be no need to release a new edition after one year.

Spartan's fluff also seems to be extremely poorly written. Their Prussian Empire, for example, doesn't actually include any of Prussia. Spartan has launched three different games now that have largely the same rules set, had significant but correctable flaws in them, and then sort of just gone on to the new rules system without actually fixing the first game. The Cataylst guys seem to be really taking their time with Leviathan, and I've been following it with interest for a couple of years now. If they do it right, it'll be worth it in th end.

Actually Spartan has four games running. Forestorm Invasion is not out but in develpoment and they want to release it in 6mm, 15mm and later in 28mm.

LOL, sorry slow internetz.

Am I missing something? Is there a guestimate for a release date at the moment? I am quite looking forward to getting the game in my hands!

Jack, take a look at my long post on the first page for some detail.

Given the labyrinthine development of this game, commenting on its twists and turns seems an appropriate way to burn my 9999th post, praise to the Changer of Ways.

Congrats on 10,000 Manchu!

The model looks really cool. I'm not really sure whether I prefer it or the Spartan equivalent.

So that is why this thread and the "Can't get along with PP" thread.
Just to edge closer to the landmark post.

Again, given the two companies involved, I'll trust the guys who have been doing a pretty good job with Battletech over the ones who've pretty much botched the releases of two (or three, I guess) games already. Don't get me wrong, I liked Uncharted Seas, but when they pretty much released it with no beta testing and had to release two or three major sets of rules changes in the first couple of months, I got a little iffy on them. And then they pushed out their second game right on the heels of the first, before Uncharted Seas was even properly balanced-the Chaos Dwarf and Undead factions were still horribly unabalanced versus the rest of the fleets in the game.

Oh, and can't even get European history right enough to include Prussia in their Prussian Empire. And they're a bunch of bloody Europeans. In a Victorian Steampunk game. As a historian, that really grinds my gears.

I just want to be able to pre-order the darned thing so I can forget about it, safe in the knowledge that 'when it's done when it's done when it's done', it will spontaneously appear on my doorstep.

In the meantime, I've ordered Dystopian Fleets, and pre-ordered the ground forces. Should keep me busy, and I'll be able to compare both systems first hand.

Gotta say, I like the DS models more at the moment, but I also like the Leviathans game system, general perceived quality, and second wave ideas.

Anyone know how much the box will cost, and the contents?

Approx 4-6 ships, at least one game board, one poster, all the rules books, some fluff, dice, ship cards and the usual templates. Price somewhere between 50 and 100 Euro.

More exact numbers when I get them.

Hey, cheers for that duncan. They've since release a big FAQ on the box contents if anyone' still reading this thread which can be found here:
http://monstersinthesky.com/2011/06/03/leviathans-faq-frequently-asked-questions/#more-781

It'll include 8 ships, assembled and prepainted with base colours too! A lot of people annoyed at that, but I like it a lot. Means I can dive right into a game instead of spending the first day just getting the things assembled.

Can't wait for pre-order!

Note new sprue shots too

As you say Helmann the pre paints get you going straight away but I like that they will also be selling kits seperately as well as pre painted models in the core box.
Am tempted to get a couple just to make and paint up

Best of both worlds so a good move imho

If you read the whole thing the price is in there as well...$79.95, thats pretty good IMO. Assures Ill be grabbing a copy. The smaller boxes of ships will run $39.95.

Good thing about pricing being finalized is that it means they are very close to production/release.

Whats my game?
Warmachine (Cygnar)
10/15mm mecha
Song of Blades & Heroes
Blackwater Gulch
X wing
Open to other games too

Well if this what's become of their plastic technology, I can only hope that they start applying it to BattleTech, and quickly.

They've made plastic miniatures in the past. In fact, there are two current plastic miniatures that are made with a good level of detail that were done as tests.

I hope so, because I'd really love high quality, plastic, multi-part battlemechs.

Theres a few things over at Drive ThruRPG.com for this game.

Looks pretty cool

http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?products_id=80472&filters=0_0_0_0&free=1

Theres a bunch more for the game, not bad so far. I saw 2 different looking games for this stuff. Is there a second part on the tabletop, ground fighting for this steampunk stuff?

One from Catalyst, the other from Avalon, are they the same game?

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Looks interesting. The general style of Dystopian Wars (sp?) doesn't really appeal to me but this scratches a bit of an itch I never knew I had.

Nope, there is no groundfighting in the pipeline at the moment.
