Oh, and Bodworld, your painting looks excellent, maybe no basing caused some people to rate you lower? I would give you an 8, 9 easily if based!

I would like to add to get a 10 may be rough for some people due to most pictures not showing model is a true light. Many people with ratings over 9 have excellent photos taken as well.

Wow your too kind mate wish everyone was like you on here. I can only thank you and add that your good advice is well noted also. Let's face it we can't all be as good as RAF ha ha.

Yeah j roc I pretty much vote the same as you. It's called "good honest voting" more people should be like you. Guess I've learnt tonight to be more tolerant of those who aren't.

Out of curiosity, how do you guys rate? For me I choose to start the rating at 5, painted table top. I will not rate anything lower but if asked I will give verbal feedback, not really my part to message someone whose stuff is not to a standard I like for my models. If it is good for them, it is good enough. I will do a quick break down.

5-tabletop, 3 colors no sloppy paint (if it is sloppy like gold paint is on the trim of a shoulder pad and on the shoulder pad itself where the 2 colors meet -1)
6-tabletop with basing
7-Above table top, highlights evident, basing good
8-Obviously above TT, can include drybrushing, wet blending, and or layering more than likely. Also great basing or extra work in the paint can make it here.
9-10, exceptional painting and basing. Crisp lines, well done freehand, complementary basing etc. Shows a mastery of painting techniques that sets it apart from those I would rate an 8.

Most models I choose to vote on fall in the 6-8 category with me. As always this is subjective and just a guideline I use.

I visit CMON so my scale is admittedly skewed by it. Unless the mini is able to run in Golden Deamon or Cystal Brush it isn't getting a 10 from me. 9's are handed out fairly often. 10yrs ago things I'm giving 7s would have been 10's the over all level of skill in the hobby has increased that much.

Poor orks... Why can't they be the good guys for once?

Not bad breakdown. Now unlike you I will give low scores because again, I view the ratings as a tool. However, to get a bad rating from me it needs to be justified.

I guess I would break my voting down in stages:

Note: Conversions, Interesting Poses, Water effects, Green Stuff Sculpting, Elaborate Bases, ect play absolutely no role in my vote for painting but are covered under the "Coolness Rating".

I also try my best not to let my personal feelings reflect in how I rank models.

Lastly, I often find myself voting on models in which part of it is a 9 while the rest of it...how best to say it...well it seams like the painter got either bored or tired and wanted to move on to something else. Like say an amazingly detailed banner that ranks in IMO in the 9s, but the rest of the model is just base painted with sparse or no highlights (what I would rank as a 5-6). This will likely bump his paint score down a notch or two. Anyways...

NA(0): Model is only primed, not painted, or vast majority is not painted. Again, I think it helps when WIP pics were left disabled. Sometimes really (and I mean gawd awefull blurry pictures will earn this rating).

1-3: Majority of model is painted. Painting is very sloppy with no clean boundary lines maintained, colors overlapping. Color selection is very poor and glaring.

4: Boundary lines are largely maintained with little color overlap. Good color selection.

5: Boundary lines are maintianed with no color overlap, no highlighting or shading. If highlighted, a poor job (shakey hand syndrome) will earn a 5.

6 - 7: Crisp solid highlights and shading; Layering is neither blended or gradual. Models with significant dry brushing (besides fur) can reach this level, but seldom higher due to the grainy texture... and that it is an easier method compared blending

8: Highlights and shades are gradually worked up to create a blended effect

9: Devil is in the free hand details. This exhibits the same blending of highlights as 8 but incorporates significant free hand details like mottled spots on animals, scroll work, glyphs, emblems, scars, ect that are sharp, precise and flavorable.

10: Golden Deamons. Shows a mastery of blended transitions and free hand details.

I'm quite similar but I attach a friends caveat by which anyone I class as a Dakka friend tends to get bumped up a point in my votes out of politeness. And there's generous days where I vote up cos I'm feeling nice. If it's a really bad job and I'm scanning random shots I just don't vote at all for the gak ones lol.

What images are we talking about? Your painting looks top notch to me. I know my gallery is not much to go by (will be doing a blog soon, then you'll see ), but perhaps I could offer any advice that you're looking for?

Same I rarely vote below 5. If it's gak it's gak they don't need me to tell them, it's obvious.

I was going to suggest better photos too. Even taking the model outside or somewhere where natural daylight can fall on it can improve the quality of the shot. Some of those work station shots are too dark and a wee bit grainy. They still look great though and frankly I don't understand some ratings. Not being a painter maybe I'm missing something, but I've seen many minis that have received high ratings that I thought painted less well than others with a lower rating. Subject matter comes into it and some minis seem to be more popular regardless of how well they're painted so ratings can be a fickle thing and do not always reflect the skill of the painter and other factors do come into play.

I edited my previous post (middle of the page) as I took some more time to actually flesh out my thoughts and paint a better picture of how I normally "try" to rank with some consistancy.

...Bad puns intended

P.S. When I actually searched for photos ranked in the twos (which you can do), I came up with a vast majority of models being either a solid paint job (5-7) or not painted at all

Yeah mAte that last photo that you posted is one Ive voted ten ten for myself it's so amazing. I used to paint for a local figure painter which kind of beat the love of painting out of me and I've only come back to figure pAinting again in the last year and a lot has changed. I feel like I'm learning new styles and techniques all over again. Still what is life if not on huge learning curve?

At first i have some sympathy, then when i saw you voting up your own work,
suddenly it "felt" like they have been justified to do so.

Spoiler:

LunaHound makes a good point, I didn't notice this at first.

It almost seems to me like you purposely want high ratings for whatever reason. Like subscribers and views on Youtube, I really don't understand why people push that so much.

You don't need a few numbers on a webpage to make your model better painted (sorry for awkward wording), if you want people to view and comment/criticise your work, maybe offer advice, then use the P+M forum for that. People are more likely to notice your work there and offer help, than in the gallery where people just 'look'.

Come to think of it, you maybe over-reacting.

If you like it vote for it? Whats wrong with a bit of pride in you own work. Did i not mention my massive ego? and believe me i'm not the only one who does it.
My work isn't the greatest out there for sure but being on Dakka dakka has got me a fair bit of sweet commision work so self voting has served a purpose for me.
If it was such a terrible thing to vote for your own work I'm sure the programmers of the forum would make it impossible to do so. As it stands you can and i and many more folk like me have voted for they're own work so i don't really see the problem.
Whatever pays the rent frankly. And believe me commission work does pay the rent.

.
Do you honestly see the 10/10 you gave yourself to be 10/10 worthy? there is pride and there is delusion if you truly believe thats a perfect paint job ( which you admit its good and not the best )
hence, you are taking it beyond been proud of your work , you are attempting to add to the score to make yourself feel better.
I mean the purpose of gallery vote is for everyone to voice their opinion. I bet if you could , you would change ALL their votes to 10/10. Then whats the point? there arnt any!

Did i not mention my massive ego? and believe me i'm not the only one who does it.

No idea, but i bet they dont make a thread of this nature either :3

My work isn't the greatest out there for sure but being on Dakka dakka has got me a fair bit of sweet commision work so self voting has served a purpose for me.

Well what ever floats your boat, its abit funny you have to resort to such tactics despite been so confident of yourself xD
If it was such a terrible thing to vote for your own work I'm sure the programmers of the forum would make it impossible to do so.

Its not horrible no, im sure the owner just find it unnecessary as most of us wont do such a petty thing, because its for fun after all.
As it stands you can and i and many more folk like me have voted for they're own work so i don't really see the problem.

Again, no problem , just very fumy.
Whatever pays the rent frankly. And believe me commission work does pay the rent.

Thats nice, but you must be desperate if you need to do resort to such tactics. I know many painters that dont even need vote for themselves and they get more customers than they can handle.
You know why? because the work speaks for themselves , not some measly number.
If it makes ya'll feel any better i promise i won't do it again.
You can check on me to make sure i don't break it.
How's that sound?[

Im sure it wouldnt make anyone feel better, because i doubt anyone cared at all in the first place.

Oh and im sure this little ranting thread was for the purpose of getting more exposure for you.
Again what ever floats your boat :3

*edit:
Oh and lastly , my painting is 10000x better than yours :3

My little rant yesterday got me nothing but an evening of apologising to the forum so lesson learned again. Heed your own advice and stop caring about some random dude your never likely to meet.
