Yep i vote for myself , infact i always vote myself to be LOWER especially when i think i dont deserve such high ratings. Or when i know its just sympathy votes.

now explain that

Oh and stop giving me 10s , you are messing up a fair vote , thats harassment itself , quite ironic from you that complains about unfair votes.

7 years ago I was in a painting competition. One of my competitors did an incredible scratch build of an Halloween themed nid's army. Complete with biovores
launching jack o lantern munitions. I took second place and that person did not rank high at all.

From my perspective I would have given that person high rankings. I considered that nid army best of show. I gave a great deal of praise and offered to buy that army off of that person since I could see how much work went into those conversions. I was of of course politely turned down. I never saw an army like that before since.

Back then, I came to the conclusion that painting competitions are highly subjective by nature. I never went to any painting or tournament that has a painting score that a key part to the overall score of the tournament.

If awards are to be allowed in any sort of competition it needs to be a seperate category all together.

I work hard on my models. My painting scheme is different. It does not rank high to those who see it not the norm. But I am not going to paint the way everyone supposed to paint. Nor am I am going to stop teaching people on how to paint their armies so that they can have something nice to play with in games.

Nor am I going to take any crap about how an army/model should be painted, by "those -so- called professionals".

I am expressing these points because I can understand where the OP is coming from. As long as you think you did a nice job on your artwork (and yes this hobby to me is artwork) then that is all that counts in the end.

Listen to those that can give you constructive help that might show how to improve your painting/modeling skills perhaps. Maybe they may have an idea or two gain a new level of hobby experience or make things easier for you to continue your art form.

Dakka has some incredible people here that are way beyond my current skills at this moment and their work is just wonderful to behold and I praise their work for their efforts.

I also like the people in here that give praise to those who are starting up the hobby and giving them advice

But again, as long as you are happy with your results with the work that you do, that is what matters.

Adam's Motto: Paint, Create, Play, but above all, have fun. -and for something silly below-

"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

You must recite every rule of Dakka Dakka. BACKWARDS.

I am indeed a Buddhist , humble? No i wont dare say that. More rather i just dont care about some numbers.

Bodworld wrote:Can't win either way I guess? I guess fairness only works in utopia. Lesson learned from you good lady.

No one is going to win anything because in order to win something , there has to be a competition to start with .
Fairness doesnt have to exist only in utopia, if anyone willing to do their part , then its a start.

Do i get happy when people give me good score? I do, but i take it waaaaaay differently than you.
I know they give me a higher score to give me some encouragement, and i appreciate them for it.

But i will never depend on the score and wear it as if i deserve it.

Wise wise words which I shall heed. One mans Picasso is another mans graffiti. I guess is what your saying. I have learnt many lessons from my original posting mainly not to be so egotistical and to not care so much what other people think of my work. I'm happy with it, my customers have never complained so that's really all that matters. I've also learned to think before I speak in future. Ha ha. You wouldn't believehow many apology posts I've made in the last 24 hours!!

Apologies only counts if its sincere. If its only worn constantly around the lips it is nothing but vocalization or pixels.

Oh , in that case, MY painting is the best and everyone should rush to my gallery right now to furtively stoke my pants.

The numbers mean nothing?! Nothing?! Madness! You speak lies!

Oh, well, no I suppose it is all subjective.
If there was a checklist I could use to determine if something was cool or not, I suppose I'd be using it.
That doesn't exist though. And If it did, it would be different for all of us.

Bod, you clearly validate yourself through an external locus of attention. You must also be aware by now that others take their pleasure from deliberately flying in the face of what people want. I think you'd be better served posting your work (which is great!) in a variety of different places, instead of placing all your eggs in the Dakka basket. I'm sure you do, but its truly pissing into the wind to decry anyone voting your stuff down. I personally muttered to myself, "Oh. Well SCREW that guy!" and went to vote down as many of your works as I could. I recanted my random internet hate campaign when I saw your kind words in my gallery.

Then I sorta felt like a dick.

Point is, if you are indeed getting crazy requests for submissions, let that speak for itself. Maybe advertise in your sig that you're booking projects. Thats awesome and I'm glad its working for you. But I sincerely hope that you're not just continuing to bump this hoping for sympathy commissions. Because... well, thats ... I have no words for that.

The same reason why us artists post our work up on the forum and in the gallery in the first place. In fact the gallery and p&m gallery largely exist for us to share our work and get feedback from the Dakka community. The repeated incidences of voters who grade punitively defeats the purpose of the gallery ranking system and helps Foster a hostile environment.

6-tabletop with basing
7-Above table top, highlights evident, basing good
8-Obviously above TT, can include drybrushing, wet blending, and or layering more than likely. Also great basing or extra work in the paint can make it here.
9-10, exceptional painting and basing. Crisp lines, well done freehand, complementary basing etc. Shows a mastery of painting techniques that sets it apart from those I would rate an 8.

My voting metric is different. I feel like there isn't enough of the high ended ratings to accurately rate the really good minis. In MY opinion, an '8' rating should NEVER have evident drybrushing on it. Ever. I feel like '7' is too high a score for "highlights evident, basing good". My metric starts lower:

(This is for painted, completed models only, not for terrain)

1 - Dude, start playing Clix quality: Hang up your brushes. This is fugly. Bare metal/plastic showing through paint, huge spots where eyes should be, garish colors.
2 - Poor quality: Very sloppy, not based, incoherent scheme (for squad pics), looks like they didn't try.
3 - Tabletop quality: 3 color minimum (in most cases), maybe a little sloppy paint, not based
4 - Tabletop quality: 3 color minimum (in most cases), no sloppy paint, must be based
5 - Above tabletop quality: attempts at highlights (drybrushing works here), edge lining, conversions score points here
6 - "Oooh" quality: I want to take a closer look at the model. This level has some nice freehand work, maybe some original details like squad insignia, etc.
7 - Contest quality: this is where your average painter and "good" painters split. This model could pass the initial cut or two at a contest. It won't quite take 3rd place, but it would have been considered.
8 - 2nd place contest quality: This model has superb blending, freehand, and/or conversion work, possibly sculpted bits
9 - 1st place contest quality - this is a truly gorgeous model. More often than not, this is a display piece. Major conversion work, sculpting, exquisite painting, precise details, realism.
10 - Slayer Sword candidate quality: this model would get my vote at a Golden Demon competition if I were a judge. this is a Jen Haley, Victoria Lamb, etc. rivaling mini.

My school of thought is that bad models are bad. There's no need for many grading scales for a bad model. You just need bad (2 rating) and REALLY bad (1 rating). Having my basic, average Joe tabletop quality set at a default of 4 allows me to grade the good stuff more precisely.

I don't see the problem with voting for yourself if your honest about what how you think your model rates.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?
