Seriously, why do metal heads have to act in the way they do? No other genre fan-base is so obsessive, except maybe extreme classical fans. This is likely to be labeled as not metal (heavy alternative with Dream Theater-esque bits thrown in and a bit of screamo) so I'm going to post it and claim it as metal just to mess with you.

You know, the biggest problem I have with metal is that there are a ridiculous amount of sub genres. I mean come on, do we have to differentiate between Thrash and power metal? It's either metal, or it isn't. Unless its Prog Metal, then it's different.

Thrash Metal is completely different from Power Metal the only thing they have remotely in common is fast tempo.

Just saying. And I am not to come off as defensive. I'm just pointing this out.

I agree with this, and being a man that hates everyone, I can answer it easily.

People that are too "into" anything are dicks.

If music is your entire life, your probably a dick. (Smug self important dick) If martial arts is your life, your probably a dick (Think your tough dick) Military (see my last dick) 40k (take it all too seriously overly argumentative dick who cheats alot) video games (never go outside dick) fashion (belittle other people, label watching dick) etc etc etc

Basically, people who take gak too seriously are fething dicks.

Matty, let's make man babies right now.

I agree, metal is metal. I hate the labels, always been stupid, but people need em to make themselves feel superior I guess.

Back in my day it was simpler.. glam was for the pretty boys that loved hair spray, thrash was all the metallica, megadeth, anthrax and slayer peoples, death metal was for the scarey kids that carved crosses and 666's on themselves with xacto knives. And that was pretty much it.

In my opinion there are 2 main kinds of metal. Metal I like and metal I don't. Does it help sometimes when describing differant styles to people? Yes. Black Sabbath is not the same as Impending Doom. However, if all of us metal listeners could just stop bickering like little girls about which band sucks and just enjoy some good ol' mosh action then I really think we could make the world a scarier and much more interesting place. I'm not saying we are bickering here mind you, just saying a lot of people I have met do this.

Musically all of the Metal genres are completely written differently from each other, unless they combine genres (Like Progressive Power Metal).

For example, for guitars, a lot of Thrash is written in standard E tuning and the average BPM is 150-200. Progressive is varied within so much in the genre that it's ridiculous; tunings completely change from band to band, the most common tuning is in standard E, standard D, and I think standard C.

You also have subject matter changing from genre to genre. Thrash is infamous for its political lyrics; Power mainly has fantasy themes.

There's just so much to the genre of "Metal" that placing the thousands of bands under one giant umbrella is impossible to do. The only thing they have in common is that they have distorted guitars (some bands don't even use them for a vast majority of their songs either!) .

Good to know somebody knows what they're talking about here.

If you're not into metal, maybe you won't hear subtle differences between genres. Hell, if you're not into metal, you probably won't pick up on major differences between genres. But there's a huge difference between power metal and grind, black metal and thrash. There's even big differences within genres, Svartsyn and Wolves in the Throne Room are both black metal, but they sound completely different and can be labeled differently within the same genre. I realize it's daunting, especially with a lot of hardcore having metal influences and the other way around, but those distinctions are valid whether you can hear it or not. Saying anything that's metal is just metal is like saying everything in the ocean is a herring just because its in the ocean. That being said, that is exactly why metal fans are so into metal. There's a lot to know and learn about, a lot to discuss with other metal heads, tons of stuff to listen to.

Anybody posting here that actually cares about metal or heavy music at all? The new Oathbreaker record is amazing (hardcore band, I know, but still heavy as a ton of bricks), and this crushing band from Dresden called Deathrite just put out a killer record.
