Seriously, why do metal heads have to act in the way they do? No other genre fan-base is so obsessive, except maybe extreme classical fans. This is likely to be labeled as not metal (heavy alternative with Dream Theater-esque bits thrown in and a bit of screamo) so I'm going to post it and claim it as metal just to mess with you.

BVB is on of my youngest daughter's favorite bands.

Just saying. And I am not to come off as defensive. I'm just pointing this out.
I was prepared for this inevitability And Gaga has also cited non-metal sources as well. I'm not opposed to it at all, and I like it quite a bit (last.fm/user/cannerus if you need proof). Lady Starlight who does her opening act does an amazing little classical rock/metal dj session fwiw. I just think sticking to one genre makes one less musically rich, and there's plenty to explore out there. Many metal fans like to brag about how it's the ultimate and the only thing they listen to.
@ar: I found out about them a couple days ago. I'm really, really liking it so far. And they're sexy to boot
Well Cannerus you have been very civil so I shall return that with me being Civil.
You honestly think I listen to just metal? Don't let the younger angrier Shadowbrand confuse you. I listen to what could roughly be called Punk Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Trance and Classical, and Instrumentals.
I really don't feel like dissecting what sub genres I listen too, because well. I am too busy and lazy to boot!
Also the only metal truly worth bragging about was Dream theater, Bathory and Iron Maiden.
Didn't I have like a small cult following on this forum? Where is Vikingscott,Chowderhead,Cheesecat?
Feth where is EF or Cheese Elemental.

I wasn't accusing you, just a faceless group that we've all encountered at one time or another

i think it's a bit of a stretch calling DT metal, imho.
Depends which album. Some are very metal (Train of Thought in particular). Just because they have other elements mixed in with the metal elements doesn't make them any less.
Gah. These kinds of discussions are why I hate discussing metal.

I think it has something to do with metal setting your bar of musical stimulus fairly high. Metal also covers a broad range of aesthetics. You can have your brain picked apart with Tech Metal, revel in the cheese of Black Metal, receive a thorough earhole-fething from Grindcore, etc.
I don't limit myself to just metal (though it is my most consumed genre by far), these are just some theories.

Of course they are. It took a while for them to grow on me (since they generally tend to lack any melody whatsoever), but when their sheer genius started to show through...holy crap. Catch 33 is the best concept album ever conceived, by far. Even the music has concepts which you can pick apart that relate to the main theme of the album (Death is theoretical; in reality, there is no such thing as reality).
I think you would really enjoy most music by the artist Bulb (Misha Mansoor). He is heavily influenced by the 'Djent' sound of Meshuggah, but most of his music is far more melodic in nature. Check him out on Youtube or soundclick.com; you can download most of his music for free. Here's a few of my favorites from him:
He's got a ton of side projects, on top of his solo work. He fronts both Periphery and Haunted Shores, and he programmed the drums for Animals as Leaders.

A lot of these bands are courtesy of Pandora over the years, otherwise I would have no idea they existed .
Ok, this isn't really a band but more of a musical project. Ayreon, by itself, is a huge masterpiece in Metal IMO. It's way too much to explain at once, but it's best to listen to every album that Ayreon has.
Same thing with Star One. It's also a musical project by Arjen Anthony Lucassen. This guy is a musical genius.
I can't believe I failed to mention: when they're one of my all-time favorites.
I can keep going for a little, but I should stop before I get carried away.
EDIT: Here's modern Megadeth for those that haven't been following them:
World got you down? People telling you what to do? Black Magicians saying they're going to cast your soul out? Don't believe in violence? Don't believe in peace? Have a listen to the Iron Hippy national anthem.
Follow that with a chaser of the best British 'eavy Metal of '84
It's sad that a lot of newer bands fail to rock as hard as a comedy troupe.
Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.
Excerpt from "Seeress of Kell", Book Five of The Malloreon series by David Eddings.
"You need not fear us, unless you are a dark heart, a vile one who preys on the innocent; I promise, you can’t hide forever in the empty darkness, for we will hunt you down like the animals you are, and pull you into the very bowels of hell." Iron - Within Temptation
There's already so much metal in here I can hardly add anything else.. but I figured I'd throw in some Volbeat.. these guys are one of my favoritest new bands.. just got a great sound to em all around, with that whole elvisymetal thing...

I agree with this, and being a man that hates everyone, I can answer it easily.
People that are too "into" anything are dicks.
If music is your entire life, your probably a dick. (Smug self important dick) If martial arts is your life, your probably a dick (Think your tough dick) Military (see my last dick) 40k (take it all too seriously overly argumentative dick who cheats alot) video games (never go outside dick) fashion (belittle other people, label watching dick) etc etc etc
Basically, people who take gak too seriously are fething dicks.
We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.
