Alright, quick update:

I'm waiting on Whalemusic360 to get the stormraven conversion parts so I can see what the beast looks like with those pieces.

Also, I bought a bottle of gloss varnish over the weekend, and basecoated the gold down on the other 4 members of my honor guard.

Pics forthcoming, I want to get more progress done.

WHOO HOO Hobby progress lol!

I've been working my butt off this week, and have been trying to get a decent amount of hobby progress this week.

I started off painting the feathers and wings on the rest of my honor guard. From there, I painted the gold basecoat, and washed it with Sepia.

The process is the same as before, Idk why I'm even explaining this lol

And then I have a potential display board, for when things get going
I have a question though, will spray paint kill the foam? :(

Yes, spray paint will melt the foam. You can coat it in white glue (not spray) first to prevent this.

Nice progress on the winged guy.

If you brush on a good base coat of paint, it'll seal the foam and you can spray it there-after... or the glue thing WM mentioned. I think the glue actually has the advantage of hardening the surface a bit, making it more durable.

Hehe, I lucked out when I was leaving my job today. One of the tech support students had just dropped off a large mess of Styrofoam, cardboard boxes, and shredded paper. I looked over, and saw this beast and my first thought was I wonder if I could use that as terrain? And then throught... Ooh display board for my army

I want to make it look like an imperial building with a tinge of red to make it look like its on Baal.

Welcome to the Blood Angels chapter Alf! As a fellow collector (1st and 2nd companies ) I will be certain to check out this blog whenever I can!

Gits is spot on about using a layer of paint first then spraying it, however, you can have great fun melting the styrofoam to make melta damage by adding a few dots of plastic glue to a small area!

I am glad you are choosing to wait for the stormraven upgrade kit, it will be worth the wait I am sure!

May I ask what gold paint you are using for the sang guard? It seems to have a fantastic natural shine to it that my old tub of shining gold could never replicate on its own!

An awesome mistake, that turned out for the best

Gits suggested this:
Gitsplitta wrote:I like the sanguinary but as mentioned already, he'd benefit from a wash of some sort. I usually use sepia for gold but you could also try delvan mud. He'll need some highlighting as well to make the upper edges of the plates pop. You can do this either before or after washing depending on how subtle or extreme you want the highlights to appear.

So I realized that I had put in a giant paint order from The Warstore, and wouldn't be able to get a silver color quickly. So I wanted to see what would happen if I mixed Chainmail (still silver, just not as much) with Gold.
I mixed a 2:2:1 ratio of Chainmail:Glorious Gold:Flow Improver mixed it up, and got a very pale gold with a tint of silver to it. Started to paint highlights, and slipped while painting the leg of my test model >_< Saw the the effect looked good (against the under plating of his armor which was still dark from GW's Shining Gold with a heavy Sepia wash) so I went with it.

The biggest issue I've got with properly measuring these is that I still have about half of a pot of GW's Chainmail, so I can't justify buying a new bottle of Vallejo equivalent, so I pour a bit of the chain mail, and then add gold to match lol Very scientific.

Also, while I've got 5 more Sanguinary Guard to paint in this scheme, I'm going to be building pieces of the 5th company. The list I'm looking to play has 2 squads of Assault Marines and 3 Dreadnoughts. So... I'm looking to add, over a long period of time, 4 Tactical Squad, 2 Devs, and 1 more Dread (might make it a Death Company Dread... that way I have 1 of each BA dread

Quick question for anyone that is still reading this (lol)

For my bases, I can't decide if I want red desert bases, or snow bases... what do you think? And how might I go about doing both.

OH-I Wanna get out of here

If you are planning on making terrain/table for yourself, go with whatever that is going to be. If there is still a questions, then go with snow. Red bases might be to much red for non sang guard models.

Btw, if you are for whatever reason down in the New Phila area and want a game or three, lemme know. I've got the table and terrain even if the store isnt open.

Snow might be a good idea...

Originally I was going to turn that big piece of styrofoam into a display board that looks like it might be an imperial building on Baal with a sort of red dusty feeling to it... But its still up in the air.

The first though I had when I read this was... I didn't paint Dante yet... OH WAIT... right... wings >_<

Thanks! My original plan for this army was an ENTIRE force based upon Sanguinary Guard (as my troops etc) and having this Angelic looking host descend from the skies... But I settled on something that still drops from the sky, and has a level of competitiveness

Since djphranq kicked me in the rear lol, I managed to take some quick WIP shots

I did some preliminary basing on my Honor Guard:

Priming the storm turkey and dreads

I need to take some good pics of the assault squad tomorrow, but I'm hating the yellow on their helmets :(

Woo! Progress!

And I must say that crimson on the shoulders of those Sanguinary Guard is quite nice and rich! Golds are toning out a lot nicer too.

I've got a lot of work to do on the assault marines... for being lesser members of the chapter, there is a TON of detail on the Death Company models, which is making careful painting that much more difficult... I've already screwed up the red in some areas while doing the wings on them.

And yet again my misfortune of choosing a username comes back to haunt me... I follow the machall.com method of name creation... slam fingers into keyboard, add vowels where needed... I got lfndrte, and so I added a few a's... completely forgetting about that alien... even though my dad has like the first season on dvd.

Also: Gameplay influencing the army, I'm adding a Jump pack Libby and another Sang priest with jump pack into the mix (my 1500 point army suffers from the only having 1 vehicle to shoot at, so my libby dread did nothing this week).

Update!

Its been a few days since I painted these, I just didn't want to upload them, because I wanted to paint the other half of the squad.

These guys needs some touching up, but they're not terrible...

I learned the following: 1) I hate painting yellow, I have so much more respect for Gitsplitta, and ANYONE that can paint yellow and not make it look like thick, yellowed gak.... 2) I still hate eyes :(

Eyes are a pain. There's a trick to yellow... that's all.

I will say with regards to yellow? Iyanden Darksun is a most beautiful base for it. Trust us.

Thanks! I'm still powering my way through the other 5 assault marines in the squad, so hopefully they'll be done by the end of the week.

Gitsplitta wrote:Eyes are a pain.

Yes, and I only dislike doing them because I'm still very inconsistent with the quality of the eyes, there are some eyes on my sang guard that look "good" and then we have captain googly eye in this assault squad.

DarkStarSabre wrote:I will say with regards to yellow? Iyanden Darksun is a most beautiful base for it. Trust us.

This is my most recent experiment. I did kinda like the result I got of just putting a layer over the rust primer (gave it an earthy looking yellow) but the next 5 guys will have the darksun base before yellow. I've got extra BA heads, so if I feel that I screwed the pooch on these first guys, I'll probably just pop them off, and do new ones (since stripping just the heads at this point would be tedious and probably ruin more of the model, knowing my luck.

What are you stripping them in to ruin the models? primer wise i prefer some stuff called floquil or the testors dark aircraft grey works pretty good too. cant wait to see the assualt marines i bet they are lookin good.

Simple Green is what I do my usual stripping with (or to Alice Cooper's Poison ). I would need to pop the head off to strip the model, at that point I might as well just put on a clean head.

While it won't ruin the model so to say, it will ruin the paintjob.
