My mom got into WH40k because I - a male - needed someone to play with. She ended up really liking the game, too.
Does that count? Or am I being too literal?

Summer of '96. Being 16 and easily misguided, instead of hanging out with the cool guys I chose to follow this clique of nerdy britons and catalonians who taught me the ways of cruelty and genocide on 28mm heroic scale.
So, no teenage summertime romance for me, only the grim darkness of the 41st millenium where there's only war.

There was a small game store in my town when I was younger, but the focus was mostly on MTG and D&D. I only occasionally stopped in for cards, so I didn't find out about tabletop wargaming for some years. In high school, I went with a buddy of mine to visit his friend one day and saw a bunch of her dad and brother's models stored on shelves. Thought it was interesting, but we were otherwise occupied. Only after being exposed to the universe by DoW did I realize that they were Space Marines.
I don't recall how, exactly, since it wasn't really explained to me at the initial exposure, but I know I was vaguely aware of a tabletop game on which DoW was based, so I started poking around online. Actually, I started lurking on Dakka shortly after glossing over a .pdf of the 4th ed. rulebook and bought AoBR a bit after that. After that, I picked up more Orks and Space Marines piecemeal on Ebay, as I found deals. I lurked and built and read source material for months before I even made an account here.
All told, I've been involved with the hobby for roughly three years, now, and Dakka almost as long as that, even if my join date puts it closer to two. Being a terribly sluggish painter/modeler and only just now moving within range of a FLGS with a 40K presence, it sometimes feels like I'm more involved with Dakka that I am with the actual hobby. Not surprising, really, as I often spend more time thinking vaguely about projects than seriously planning them and more time planning than actually executing.

2 years ago I went to Adepticon for my birthday. At the time I played fantasy, sadly, there wasn't much fantasy there but on the good side the 40k was sweet. So me and my Dad bought an AoBR set and split it. I took the marines and he took the orks. I no longer have the marines.

Started playing Star Wars Minatures put out by Wizards of the Coast years ago and spent tons of money. The rules were obtuse; the later incarnations eventually focused on jedi and crazy nonsense and then they didn't renew their license with Lucasarts. The whole time though there were these big boxes hanging on the walls of my flgs whispering little teases promising blood and gore, the chance of carnage and victory, and to embark into a universe that knows only war. AoBR started it but I soon was consumed and wished I had invested in this game earlier.

A few friends were into WHFB. I joined the bandwagon and fell in love with that system. Played Vampire Counts and Warriors of Chaos for the most part. I honestly don't remember how we got into 40k. I do remember having a strong dislike for the system even as I was a fan of WHFB. Somewhere along the line I started a 'nids army and then built a Tau force. Stopped playing for a few years and picked it back up recently.
I've been obsessively addicted/madly in love with 40k and its fluff ever since and can't imagine I'll ever stop collecting.

White Dwarf. It actually worked. Well, it did back in the early 90's.
I was, IIRC, 9. My brother came home from high school with a White Dwarf he borrowed off a friend. He looked through it and Titan Legions caught his eye. We saved money together and our dad drove all the fething way to the Sydney, Chatswood store for it, which at the time was the closest GW.
When we walked in, they were doing the launch for 2nd edition 40k. Our dad told us to get that instead, but we decided to go with Titan Legions, I got the Mechanicus and he got the Orks. After 6 months we bought 2nd edition 40k and split the contents, this time the other way, with me getting the Orks and him getting the Space Marines.

Space Crusade was my entry game to the general universe/tabletop game.
Prior to that always had an interest in Airfix, army men and the true classic that was Axis & Allies.

I admit my brother, dad and I started with hero quest, though we didn't realize that was a GW game until years after we started 40k.

When I was young I lived across the street from the game store and would always go to look at the people painting stuff there. I was always interested in little figures and building my very own army. Interestingly, it was Nurgle and TombKing themed stuff that caught my eye but now i'm playing BA.

I had Heroquest when I was a sprout, but I didn't know anything about GW at the time.
I'd known people who'd played RT and 2nd edition, and read about it in magazines like Dragon, and always thought it looked pretty neat, but didn't really get into it until I'd play DoW and decided to give the TT game a try as well.
