It's because of their unfortunate status. If Space Marines get owned like that over and over, it comes off as somewhat "un-fluffy" and more importantly stains the very symbol of GW.

If GW owns Guardsmen, nobody takes it seriously. Oh, some horde of Daemons killed some Guardsmen? Big whoop, 10 Guardsmen just died tying their shoes.

In Fluff, SoB fall in-between the legendary Space Marines and the fodder Guardsmen. This is why they're sacrificed so often for story purposes, mostly to show off an enemy or the capabilities of those who kill them.

The exception is the Order of Our Martyred Lady, which seems to REALLY like getting killed off in droves in fluff. I think it has something to do with their name.

Edit: Interestingly, the only current Sister of Battle special character, Saint Celestine, was also from that same Order Militant that kept getting massacred. And she's - in all likelihood - dead now. Relic armor from a long-dead Saint doesn't protect from massive nuclear reactions, I suppose.

Don't let Melissa see this, Kan.

God forbid we inject any sort of pragmatism or ruthlessness into her beloved "paragons of humanity".

Hang on a sec, let me get my Witch Hunters Codex out... I think there's a relevant quote...

Ah, here we are.

Codex: Witch hunters, page 2, The Ordo Hereticus

"The Sisters of Battle are shining examples of all that is good about humanity, the pinnacle of faith, devotion, and purity. As well as forming the Chamber Militant of the Ordo Hereticus, the Sisters of Battle also provide the fighting arm of the Ecclesiarchy, the monolithic organization devoted to the worship of the Emperor and the preaching of the Imperial Creed. Armed with the finest weapons and armour the Ecclesiarchy can provide, they are amongst the best and bravest warriors an Inquisitor can call upon."

Emphasis mine.

If that ain't a description of a paragon, I dunno what is.

You are aware the Codexes are propaganda essentially right?

Should we also believe Ultramarines, hell any chapter, are paragons of justice and faith as well?

Yes, it's all propaganda. Orks are really a peace loving race who wish to travel the universe teaching others the wisdom they have, but the Imperium lies to it citizens that the green skins are monstrous brutes that don't know how to even screw in a light bulb.

I thought it was a well established fact by now, that all codexes for each race, except for I think Tyranids and Orks which are narrated by experiences mainly found with Imperial Forces (Dark Eldar I don't know about I haven't read it extensively), are essentially propganda for its own race?
Even if it wasn't the case now, during 3rd edition when Codex: WitchHunters was published that would almost certainly be the case wouldn't it?

Ah, okay. ^^

So the Ultramarines never defended their homeworld from Tyranids, it was lost and most of the chapter destroyed. Grey Knights fall to Chaos by the dozens. The Sisters of Battle openly recruit male members. The Imperium is down to only a handful of worlds. All stuff stated directly to the contrary is merely Codex propaganda to make the army within look good.

I mean, that IS where we're going with this, right?

No, not really.

His point is that something which was written in a Codex about the army of said Codex isn't true, because Codex fluff is just propaganda to make that army look better.

I just applied that logic to other Codexes. It's a common thing to do, apparently.

Mostly I was pissed because there's a very impassioned thread where people are ripping on someone for wanting to do stuff with his army that's against Codex fluff, and then this guy comes along and says, "No, this piece of Codex fluff for this other army just isn't true because it's in a Codex. Ignore it."

I think you need to look up what the word propaganda means, because its doesn't mean what you think it means.

Propaganda makes people look better, theres grains of truth in what they say and the events of what happened but its shown to be very positive for the side thats telling the story, often mnimalising casualties, focusing on the tactical genius of their commanders and disparaging the enemies tactics, when the reality is much , much different

I'm not sure how this was hard to understand and I thought this was fairly common knowledge if you had read the background?

This thread teaches me that we're not allowed to joke about Sisters around ANYONE, because a lack of a sense of humor is a requisite for being a Sisters player.

On another note, I had ordered some SoB minis from my local GW today - mmm, in-store terminal... helps when I don't have a credit card - and the guy running the cash and I had a bit of a talk about the upcoming Sisters stuff - he'd been reading the Internet rumors too, apparently. This other guy comes into the conversation and says, "Great, more Space Marine stuff."

The blackshirt and I tried to convince him that Sisters of Battle were most definitely NOT Space Marines. The guy asked if they had a save like Space Marines, and of course they do. Oddly, the thing that convinced him otherwise was Sisters having strength and toughness of a weaker value than Space Marines.

I dunno, maybe he was kidding around. Sometimes I can't tell.

Sisters get a lot of love from the players, if not from GW. PErsonally, I love the Sisters. Not the Witch Hunters, just the sisters. They've been the butt-monkey of the 40k universe for too long. They need to get back on their feet and slaugher a few hundreds of Grey Knights. And maybe Chaos Space Marines. But mostly Grey Knights.

Indeed. ^^

Perhaps a prayer for the Emperor's divine guidance will show the Grey Knights who's boss. And after the final silver armored psyker-Marine is laid low, and the Sororitas' spiked power heel is plunged into his chest... You know, I don't know how to end that. It's just such a pleasant thought. ^^ Grey Knights first. Chaos-worshipping rogue psyker mutant heretics next.

Hey! It could be an animated show! Rogue psyker mutant heretics! Focusing on the Chaos-worshippers as main characters. New main character every week, as at the end, the Sisters of Battle burst in and drag him away for... err... re-education? Snackrifice to the God-Emperor?

Definitely love Sisters. ^^ I haven't been keen on Witch Hunters since I first read the fluff of the 'dex named after them, if only for dislike of the whole Inquisition thing. Only reason I have an Inquisitor mini is because I couldn't resist the chance to take a Sister Hospitaller or two. I hope they become a squad upgrade for Celestians, though that's just wish-listing.

Hm... I wonder what would happen if one were to ask an Adepta Sororitas to make one a sandwich. I would imagine that a Sister Hospitaller, assuming one were the Sister's patient or charge, would make it for one . . . or tell one that one is well enough to return to one's duties.

But a Sister of Battle... Hmmm... I wonder what it'd be like to enter orbit without aid of a shuttlecraft...

I agree, they are awesome army that should not be left aside when there are people that plays with them. And it shouldn't be a problem for them to slay GK, they have numbers, weapons and even saints. Oh.

Personally, I'd like something a little more unique than something like the ForgeWorld Exorcist kit, which is basically an alternate Whirlwind, looks-wise.

The design is something I didn't like myself until a week or two ago, when it suddenly grew on me. ^^ That happened a few minutes after I figured out that the FW Exorcist kit with a set of Sisters of Battle doors would cost me about a dollar or two less than the Games Workshop one, once shipping was included but before taxes. And most of my issues with the GW one were what I heard about the difficulties in assembling a mini with so many large, metal parts.
