(Well you're not supposed to, characters have been assigned ships yes, but they are awaiting their officers in orbit, cadets are planet-side awaiting the official promotion to LT commander so they can legally command them in battle. Your character should be amongst those now standing on a parade ground.)

BIC:.... Graduation part 2 ......

Trix stood firm as a statue, the only thing revealing that she was amongst the living was her breathing. As much as the admiral wanted, this was something she couldn't stop. Trix looked at the podium, something was off. She watched as a dosen security agents nervously controlled it in search of boms. Plus she noticed hovering Holo-bots, The admiral just stood there. She let her internal data-processor open a link, to the projector. Asking to view the guest channel. She saw herself standing amongst her fellow peers, while commentators blattered like idiots. She heared them saying "Fleet commander." "So that's whats going on. She quickly recorded the sentence and opened a link with Natalie. She saw the small rise of her eyebrows, before she accepted. Trix quickly passed the file over. She noticed Natalies eyebrows raise even higher. "The fleet commander himself." She tought. "Her House would be so proud". She knew that her House was watching, as was the rest of Aria. It was almost time.

Bam. Page 2.

Harrab, you've got a PM coming your way.

Anyway, I'll make an IC post in a moment, and then we'll have the event conclusion with any luck.

Also, I don't think that our characters should know which/what ship they've been assigned to.. and that's how I've played my character so far. It'll be far more interesting when they're told at the ceremony this way. So I suggest people get editing. Otherwise we've got inconsistencies and my character is going to be a bit out of place.

Meh, we'll just say yours hasn't been finalized yet, what with all the complaints about the Pioneer going to a rookie for example.

Okay, this IS interesting.. but I'm not sure if Harrab's cool with us having mini computers implanted in all of our brains. Hell, I'm not sure if I'm cool with it.

Meh, it's the GMs call on this one.

Well, for space travel you have to make millions of calculations, and split second decision at breackneck speeds. So it would be helpful.

(Ok, then lets discuss it in the interest thread, as i can see points both for and against this little addition, lets not crowd this thread with OCC, thats what the Interest Thread is for.)

Yeah, but that's what the ships' AI systems are for.

I mean, I suppose it's possible.. but the operation wouldn't be particularly pleasant now would it? You also have to consider if it'd actually be possible to do this, even in a hundred years' time.

OOC in the Roleplay thread is fine; it's mindless spam and off-topic that needs to be avoided. /is experienced GM.

I find it's good to have the roleplay and the discussion in one place, so that nobody looses track of what's going on.

If the interest thread does remain as the discussion thread, then please rename it so.

OOC:

But seriously, putting a small computer inside someone's brain and making it work and do all of the complicated tasks we've already seen.. not sure.

If any of you have seen Star Trek: Enterprise, it represents what the human race has accomplished in just ~200 years from now, and whilst in some ways it's far more advanced (replicators, phasers) in others it's less so (computers, ship strength/size/power). Different sci-fi universe, I know, but it's fairly realistic within its own setting (ie, lots and lots of aliens).

Mark had been in parades before while he served in the navy, they were all the same. Keep your trap shut and face forward, don't look around and most importantly, stick to the script. Don't improvise and don't follow what your fellow sailors are doing, since if they're doing something different, they're doing something wrong.

Whilst they stood to attention in the centre of the plaza, Mark wondered if his ex-wife or his kid were watching. They were planetside while he was off gallivanting in space as his ex-wife put it. To his kid however, he was a god-damned hero, even if he was just a lowly NCO in the navy. Now, after twelve long years, he would finally gain command of his own ship.

Maybe now that he makes the officer pay band, he could finally afford to buy his old parent's place back on Earth. Thinking back to some of the cadets, he wondered how many of them were from Earth, and not some far flung colony in outer space.

His thoughts came back to the ceremony at hand, as he waited for the Fleet Admiral to arrive to finish the ceremony.

But Internal data-processors are Kewl!!

It's how i envisioned piloting my ship, and if you have a AI, then it would be able to do everything itself...Beating the point of having a commander to sail it.

We already have Internal data-processors, it's called the brain. Actually I think Klimono might need a new one. /jk!

But if it knows everything.... you can let it run variables to calculate the best move(at a faster rate then humans, wich ... well lets face it... We're going to wing it)... So it's just a matter of giving it the right to control.

Humans want to explore and fly about through space and pull off loads of shenanigans - AI's are just there to help them do this, not replace them. Besides, a computer needs to be told what to do - even an AI needs to be given a purpose. No computer can match the human brain.. mostly because it's not alive - it doesn't have real, natural emotions or thoughts.. it's all pre-programmed, even if done so incredibly well.

See guys, I use my internal-data-processor, and it works too! Well, when I say "works" I mean "hamster in a wheel", but it gets me through the day, so it's good enough for me.

Comm-beads are highly probable; implanted in the ear.

Personally I don't want one. It's icky.

Just some light banter

Anyway, I agree on AI's never becoming fully aware, they simply don't have the ability to break their limitations by either replicating or by adding processors, while a human brain can always replenish cells and gain new memories and replace older outdated memories.
