I going to suggest in a non-inflammatory and not sarcastic way that you read the Necron Codex as it elaborates what you've said far beyond what you have stated. Yes, the home planet was miserable due to it's intense radiation and they Did find a C'tan there, the Nightbringer. But only him. Necrodermis had been previously used for ship travel and as a mainstay of technology, it's why they had been able to travel vast distances with such short lives and no FTL travel, they would hibernate in a Necrodermis shell, very unlike their current ones, in order to to remain 'ageless' during the journey to a new colony

Lexicanum disagrees with you Miraclefish.

Their numbers are irrelevant. The Old Ones were far beyond any of the races up and active today, and the Necrons wiped them out. I don't think it is unreasonable to assume they have a nasty amount of warriors at their disposal.

The Necrons are also far nastier in fluff than they are on the table, at least until the Space Marines show up

They are portrayed as being terrifying and very hard to bring down.

Fluff Marines get to wear Plot-TDA, but even then they will acknowledge that (barring poor writing examples) the Necrons are tough as nails and a bit creepy

I would be very suprised if the warriors stashed in all the tomb worlds didn't add up to trillions. I doubt they will give us an exact count though

Hell, the Necron Codex disagrees with Miraclefish.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

Limited to their own system? Hardly.

"Unable to find peace on their own world, the Necrontyr blindly groped outward to other stars. Using stasis crypts and slow-burning torch ships, clad in Living Metal to resist the age-long journeys into the void, they began to colonise distant planets."
- Necron codex, page 24

It is also worth mentioning Necrontyr technology was actually MORE advanced than that of the Old Ones, who had the advantage due to their Webway and psykers.

Hell, Necrons are definitely more endurant than Marines.

Plasma weaponry is noted to be ineffective against them.

Gods, don't I wish that the tabletop matched the fluff sometimes..

Of course if it did you'd have to concede the moment the first drop-pod arrived and your lords would go down faster than a drunken prom-date..

In the Necron codex, the Lord at Damnos was effortlessly cutting through marine after marine, unable to be stopped

But then Ward had to be a douche and change that.

Now the Lord gets flattened by a Dreadnought.

And the other lords have all the resilience of wet toilet paper.

Once the Marines join the fight the Necrons go from unkillable to being downed by improvised tools, killing about one marine per 20 or so Necron kills.

The Rulebook fluff has the Fall of Damnos be a Necron Victory. The book, not so much...

Not so much... there is nothing in FoD that contradicts the Marine Codex or the Necron Codex

FoD is clearly just an expansion of the earlier stages of the Fall and clearly (if you bothered to read that last two pages of the book) the Necrons largest numbers and ultimate leader have yet to come into play as the story closes.

I did read that last section of the book, thankyou. I was talking about the main rulebook's section on the Fall of Damnos, not the Necron Codex. In that the world is swiftly overwhelmed. The marines stage several evacuation missions and leave hurriedly.

The Necrons have another, better Lord. Good for them. Given how easy the others went down this doesn't hold out much hope, does it?

They have more in numbers. Given that they have miners taking out necrons by the score, let alone the Marines, the numbers would have to be ridiculously tilted in the Necron side's favor.

If YOU'd bothered to read the end of the book you'd have seen the part where the Marines are bringing in a battlebarge full of tanks and reinforcements.. They acknowledge that all they have done so far is set the Necrons back, but given the tiny size of the strikeforce this is hardly surprising.

Regardless. The book does not convey a Necron victory. It conveys a 'Marines walk through these guys like cobwebs' feel, followed by both sides doing the 'soon.. we shall strike soon' thing.

As I doubt there will be a Fall of Damnos Part Two novel, the general feeling is not that of a Necron defeat of the world.

A good read is Apocalypse page 162+163

I Wish they base the next codex on these pages, the person who wrote this is epic.

talks about

bronze silver gold level lords

and hints of platinum lords (never seen b4)

the structure of a tomb worlds command structure

OK - There is reference (Its late, if no one else can back me up I'll check tomorrow and quote directly) that outlines the Necrons 'enslaving' other races, not just destroying them.

I always took this to mean that they were Necron'd otherwise what use would they serve? Surly not just to feed off?

There are a lot of tomb worlds, they were a huge player in a big war awhile ago and their name is described as Legion, so I'd guess there are inbetween 2 and 4 trillion Necrons.

Like Terra, which is definitely a tomb world.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Considering that the Necrons were trying to build their tombs on lifeless worlds so that there would be no problems from Enslavers, they managed to put an awful lot of them on planets that are orbiting in the habital zone of their star.

Context!

While Legion is 1,000, The way the expression is used is also to convey that there are tons of something.

again, its like Metaphorical.

1,000 is another number that gets tossed around meaning "lots"

kinda like how the Imperium is said to consist of 1 million worlds. it doesn't mean they have exactly 1,000,000 planets. they have around 1 million at any given time. sometimes more. sometimes less.

to throw even more ambiguity into the mix, a Roman legion was actually around 6000 men. a Century was, in actual practice, 60-80 men(80 at full strength) and not 100(like it was originally or as its name suggests)
