I'm aware of this use of the word

It does tie in nicely with the Legion thing though..

We are legion

what, there's only a thousand of you?

A thousand worlds of us...

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

I used to think there was a lot of them and that they caused the galactic extinction but actually that was The Enslavers. So actually, I don't think there are many at all. They are one of the least threatening threats to the IoM.

Partly right.

They were fighting a war against the old ones and all their creations. They had no allies, so there would have had to be a lot of them, especially given the crappiness of the average necron warrior

The enslavers came into the scene late, when the new psychic races the Old Ones created amped up the warp and let them out accidentally. They then turned on the tasty psychic races, and the Necrons went into hibernation because the Ctan had nothing to feed on. (very rough and ready.. longer version is in the codex).

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Right now there's only a couple of tomb worlds awake, so right now they aren't much of a threat, until the other ones wake. You're right on that one, as long as the other worlds and Necron fleets are still in mothballs. I get the feeling with the new codex that the alarm clock just might go off...

Despite the shot at the rule-set of Codex Necrons in the fluff Necrons are actually very formidable. Also their technology is on an insane, unparralled level. They are the fastest race: able to get around the galaxy faster than warp travel without having to deal without all that nasty warp-travel unpredictability. That and the fact they basically never die even when killed they get a lot of bang for the individual Necron buck. I think the Necron population is actually quite low: we're talking Tau levels here.

It's listed as about a thousand tombworlds in the main rulebook, i think.

Definitely not numerically superior to the IOM, nids or orks, but i'd say bigger than the Tau.

The Emperor doesn't have a GKs unshakable faith in the Emperor which is....basically himself?
