Orks occupy essentially the entirety of known space. They are by FAR the most populous race in the galaxy, quite possibly outnumbering all other sentient races combined. To quote Codex: Orks... anywhere humanity goes, Orks have already been there or are not long in the coming.

Also, orks have a habit of migrating to wherever there is the most chance of a fight, so a hive fleet several light years across would be a pretty big target for them. It's the reason Armageddon is so swamped with fighting in canon, after all; ork tribes heard about it and decided to join in.

Why?
Firstly, Terra is the most heavily fortified planet in the galaxy. The Hive Mind knows the casualties it would suffer would be astronomical; it would be far easier to wipe out any nearby agri-worlds and let it starve. There Orks probably don't know where it is.
Secondly, the winner of the Ork/Nid war would have far too many men to land on a planet that is essentially a giant city. Trillions of gribblies would be impossible to manouver in a huge network of roads, and would become seperated and easy to destroy. Plus, the space defenses prevent anything hanging around in orbit long enough to do any sigificant damage.
Thirdly, the winner would have far too many men to send at a single planet anyway. They would fight for entire sub-sectors at a time.
Edit: And fourthly, if the Golden Throne was at risk of being unplugged, the Eldar would manipulate all they could to divert the invader's attention. Turning the Galaxy in to a second Eye of Terror isn't good for anyone...except Chaos.

Because Terra is the heart of Mankind. If something happened to her I cannot imagine the answer of people all over the galaxy.

No the majority of the Galaxy isn't the Imperium...
The Imperium is spread far and wide but it doesn't have a blanket control.
The fall of the Imperium wouldn't necessarily dictate the destruction of the galaxy.

The majority of the galaxy is Ork-controlled and Ork-contested.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

The lore is Imperium-focused, so the only major battle between Orks and 'Nids you hear about is the one that an Inquisitor set up.

Not the only one that exists.

True and true....
But Imperium is more organized than Orks.
And I doubt that they will go down quietly. They will destroy as much as they can that in the end a galaxy will be more emptier than it was after the Enslaver plague.
I wouldn't be surprised if they go as far as blowing up sons to slow down the enemy.
And the destruction of the Imperium indeed decide the fate of the galaxy, because wit the Imeprium out of the way Chaos will have much easier time converting the galaxy into one giant Eye of Terror.

Why would the Orks care about that? Although whinyboy marines aren't quite as good as loyalists working together in concert with Imperial Guard, it still sounds like a fun little scrap!

Orks themselves are inherently resistant to the forces of Chaos to the point that a Chaos-touched Ork is essentially unheard of.

Yes but they would fall in the end, a long end but they would fall. Simply because Daemons are immortal and can return after you kill them. And if we take that ork will never truly unite but continue fighting against one another even if Imperium is gone and all other races are gone to almost gone Chaos will win in the long run by taking out their clans and Empires one by one.

On the OP, Orks have protected the galaxy in a way. They are sort of living shield against all the threats that are quite powerful to deal with ( Tyranidsc Chaos and Necrons ). Maybe that was the soul purpose the Old Ones have in-stored for them as well as putting Eldar to watch over them.

No. They were fighting the remnants of Hive Fleets destroyed by Imperium and Eldar. They only fought 1 Hive Fleet ( Gorgon ) and they won in the end with the help of Humans. Because Tyranids became RESISTANT TO PLASMA WEAPONS. So Tau wouldn't be to much of a help in the long run...

It isn't, actually. The IoM controls 1 million planets, and there are an estimated 5 billion planets in the galaxy. The IoM can't really be measured in terms of territory, since they're spread so thin-the aliens could pretty easily fly out. You could fling a space ship out from one side of the Galaxy to the other at the speed of light, and the odds are it wouldn't meet any other planets. The odds that it would meet one of the million or so Imperial planets are miniscule. Basically, the IoM wouldn't really be able to strike back effectively when they have little idea of where the enemy planets and ships are.

Exactly. Sun Tzu said to strike where your enemy is weakest. If you strike where they're strongest that's, like, the opposite.
