Subject: UFC/MMA, great sport or mindless violence?
Its a sport, because you have to have good physical fitness, stamina and co ordination to be any good at it.
But its not because you don't have to be good at it.
Its got absolutely nothing on the actual wonderful sport of boxing, and I only watch it when it happens to be on in the background of a pub, but, well, its not complete horse gak.
We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

They're athletes, and they train as hard or harder than anyone in any other sport. The sport is very different now compared to 10 years ago but I guess there's still a lot of ignorance left over.
The question isn't why do I kill. The question is, why I don't kill everybody.

MMA is the ultimate sport. There is no other competition amongst men that proves more.
NFL stars have a hard time doing an MMA workout. I'd bet that GSP is on caliber with Olympic athletes, and MMA is a baby in the sports world. In 10 yeras we will be watching fighters that defy modern thought.
Long live MMA, I found out about Warhammer on Sherdog, an MMA forum

Its sport, and a very pure one as far as athletic endeavours go.
Its amazing how most of the hate/dislike for it comes out of ignorance- this is both amongst the 'fans' and the haters of MMA.
The training these guys put in, day in and day out, week after week- all year long. Theres no 'off season' for MMA, sometimes they get offered a fight on a weeks notice if the planned fighter gets injured.
As for the 'cuddling', sure- its can be boring if you dont have a clue of whats going on. Its alot harder to figure out who is winning compared to guys throwing punches or kicks. For those that don't know the difference between a darce choke and a kimura its easier to boo than it is to educate yourself.
And for those that think its not a real sport- almost every one of the top tier fighters are coming from an athletic background. All American collegiate wrestlers, olympic wrestlers, Jujitsu and Judo world champions, former NFL players.
If the only thing you know about MMA is the Pay Per View hype commercials- you really know nothing of MMA.
And so you all dont get angry at being called ignorant- Ive trained in JKD, BJJ, Krav Maga, and Ive ref'd and judged amateur MMA bouts. If you have any questions about how the 10 point 'must' scoring works, or why the Universal rules of MMA are a good thing for the sport- feel free to ask
Now- Its time for me to go- UFC 136 PPV is starting and theres some potentially amazing fights lined up

A bit of both, I mean it's just a sport, you see people tackle each other in football and beat the snot out of each other in hockey...they just skip the scoring part and go straight to beating the crap out of each other...

Um, there IS a scoring system. Not every fight ends with a KO or submission.

Ultimate QFT.
While I dont mind the occasional bout of mindless violance, I could never participate in this sort of "sport". If i wanted to wrestle someone while rolling around on the ground i'd just antagonize my brother till he tackles me and wrestle him.

It's kind of like Nascar to me. I understand it is a demanding activity that requires intense skill/training/practice to be good at. That doesn't change the fact that it is boring to watch. I mean, curling is hard as hell too. Why aren't we all watching that?
... at least as entertaining as MMA

I know that, my dad watches it...by "scoring" I meant kicking/throwing a ball throw a goal...

This is exactly what i was thinking, once you get to understand the ground game you appreciate how it is like chess albeit violent chess. Also as for people hating on tapout tee shirt wearers etc,it's the same as wearing a football top or hockey jersey and no one in their right mind would think a tee shirt makes you look hard.

Yuh, basically this. On paper it's more visceral than boxing and certainly less pathetically stupid than WWE, but it's hard to justify any reason why I want to watch two guys on the ground all over eachother for 14 of the 15 minute fight.
If I wanted to watch two people climb all over each other all day, I'd watch a dirty film.

Here's how I see UFC:
The two fighters are no doubt great at what they do, BUT It's not very interesting to watch them grapple on the ground for 5 minutes straight. Some fighters I've seen are absolutely devastating on their feet, that's ok, but I have no idea why it's entertaining to watch this stuff.
Here's how I see people who watch UFC:
Stop wearing TapOut shirts. You're not cool, in fact TapOut apparel is a surefire sign that you are an idiot. It's usually a bunch of white dudes, flat bill cap cocked to the side, who like to bench really high weights ONCE and consider that a workout, and are typically douches. They like to think that their MMA training will make them good fighters.... but here's the thing, if you make me pissed off enough to fight you I ain't playing by the rules. Eyes will be poked out, jugulars will be bitten and torn, I'll find whatever is laying around to crack your skull open.
Maybe you hang out with immature women. Maybe you're attracted to immature women because you think they'll let you shpadoink them.

Man, the MMA fighters train hard, sure they do.... But here is a newsflash for a lot of you.....WWE 'wrestlers' train just as hard, if not harder! The point and biggest difference between MMA and WWE is that WWE is all about the entertainment factor, the storylines, and the stupid spandex. MMA is probably viewed as a more serious sport.
I like watching both, although WWE just shaves it for me 'cos it entertains me more.
As for the topic, MMA is a sport. Mindless violence? Nah.....

so it is safe to say anyone who dislikes MMA has no attention span?
Yes there are a few boring fights, but there are boring everything. I love the NFL, yet there are boring ass games. There are boring ass 40K games. Hell some sex is boring, anything can have a bit of boredom in it, doesn't mean 99% of the time it doesn't kick ass.
that last fight was awesome, and it lasted a mere few seconds

My brother was a wrestler and at first I thought it was boring as hell but when I watched a few matches it was really something to watch(except for heavyweight which was a contest to see who could fall down on the other first). MMA is like wrestling and martial arts combined which makes for some really interesting moves. I know that a lot of people don't like the grappling but when you see people turn the tables in a grapple its really cool to watch. The striking matches are all right as well because its cool to see how people react to a punch. When a guy's legs turn to noodles after a punch you know he's out and luckily the ref usually stops it before too much damage can be done after that point.
That's what separates it from street fights and thuggery I think, the level of sportsmanship and adherence to rules are deciding factors.
For example, a guy got poked in the eye and the fight was stopped so he could recover from it. If it was thuggery I would imagine that the other guy would be gouging his eyes out with his thumbs.

Absolutely, as a spectacle I don't think it even comes close to boxing.
The only time I found this kind of thing entertaining was when it was first starting to get popular many years ago, and they used to create totally random match-ups like thai kick boxers taking on sumo wrestlers and the like (basically like something out of street fighter).
