When I first started playing, at the very tail end of 2nd (think I got two games in with a borrowed guard army before 3rd came out and I started my DE) my friend used to regularly trounce me. His swordwind eldar would rip me up, no matter what army I played. This went on for years- he never threw a game and he never took it easy on me.

As that time passed, it got to the point where I would occasionally tie him... but I was basically crushing other players. When I finally beat him, and continued to beat him, it was such a great feeling. It made me a much better player than I otherwise would have been. You shouldn't take that opportunity away from your friend.

Agreed completely. I used to post my flashgits army once in awhile mainly for ideas on how to better use them, but I said screw it and stopped because no matter how many times I said " and dont tell me they suck and to drop them" Id ALWAYS get people saying either drop those and go BW spam, or drop those and go Kan Wall. Its annoying hearing to play the only 2 internet builds that do well at tournies. I dont play tournies and sometimes I just want to use my FlashGits, they are my fav unit in the codex hands down. So obviously when I take them, its because they are cool, not because I plan on winning everygame for 10 games strait.

So yea, give him advice and such on what he has, other wise youll just come off as a jerk and he will stop playing with you

Sorry to derail (just this once, I promise!) but I'm totally with this! Nothing irritates me more then saying 'I like this unit, what are the good ways to play him' to be responded to with nothing but 'herp derp, thats not on a netlist, why would you ever do that?'

I use a Captain in my BA army because I love my conversion model and I think Space Marines strike groups would be lead by a tactical genuis. Not a priest, or a warp-loving wizard. A Captain. The rank that defines cool in so many things (Star Trek, Bleach etc etc etc). And yet, everytime I post a list or tell people about it, I get flamed for not using a librarian, and only a librarian. Sigh.

Anyways, back to topic.

Yeah, use a fun army and get the guy to proxy with some things so he can play with a bunch of different units without having to pay for them until he feels good about something. Hell, I'm poor and replace my proxies at a rate of £5 a month. If that!

Never throw a game.

However, I try to run down what worked and did not work with my army after the game, have him do the same.
