The first strike is the most important. Whoever attacks and wins enough battles before the other side can gather their forces would be victorious.

Keep in mind with the CSM, they could have demonic support. In theory, CSM has infinite reinforcements.

Chaos Space Marines lost this fight when they had almost every advantage.

Now, they're outgunned, outmanned, out maneuevered, and out-teched. They'd have no chance.

The background supports this as CSM are currently 0 for 13 in Black Crusades.

SM would win because even if ever SM chapter has its somewhat identical chapter that's CSM which rivals it skillfully in its field (range, melee, sieges), SMs just have near infinite resources to draw upon, and they have superior numbers, so I'd say they'd win

It is almost an even matchup.

CSM and SM are exactly alike, except for one thing Tactics.

the SM can count on their brethren to be where they need them, the CSM not so much.

SM win, but just barely win.

In an all out chaos space marine versus loyalist space marine conflict I'd say the loyalists would win, because: A: they have more to lose, lots lots more to lose, and B: they have specialist chapters dedicated to fighting chaos (grey knights and the chapters assigned to guard the eye of terror)

Chaos would win. They are evenly matched apart from that CSM are boosted with the powers of the warp. Therefore, in a pitched batlle chaos would win.

If Chaos wasn't about spreading Chaos,they would have destroyed the Imperium a long time ago. The Chaos gods are toying because thy can. Look at the havoc that man does in order to prevent Chaos from winning.

If Chaos won there would be law and order, not Chaos, so by winning Chaos would actually defeat itself.

If Chaos won it would not create order. It would make Chaos by destroying any society and order. I don't see how you came to that conclusion. It would want the Imperium to be nonexistant leaving people alive, but no law to keep them in line. Since that hasn't happened I assume it isn't as easy for them to win as you make it out to be.

The biggest difference between CSM and SM is that the loyalists have more numbers, better tech support, and tactics. While the only advantage CSM have is slightly more use of the warp, and that's not as big an advantage as most people seem to think outside of the Eye of Terror.
