Necrons = Terminators from Terminator
Tyranids = Xenomorphs from Alien
Orks = Orcs but funny
Sisters of Battle = Joan of Arc if she were Gothic
Eldar = Elves
Dark Eldar = XXX Elves
Tau = Anime/ Gundum
Imperial Guard = Saving Privet Ryan with lasers

Space Marines= 8ft tall superhumans who eat war and crap awesome.
Imperial Guard= "But sir... BLAM" Nuff said.
Eldar= SPESS ELVES
Dark Eldar= Perversed, sado-masocist SPESS ELVES
Necrons= ..................... Kill all life. 
Orks= Green guys who are made for fighting and winning. Reproduce by scratching their skin.
Tyranids= OMNOMNOMNOM the galaxy, OMNOMNOM everything, OMNOMNOM etc. etc. etc.
Chaos= 
Tau= Basically anime fan space communists.
Sisters of Battle= All must burn! Die, heretics!

BTW, the Eldar and Orks were created by the Old Ones
The Old Ones were basically at war with the Necronus (i think thats what its called), who lost after the necronus sided with the C'Tan and became robots

Necrontyr, I believe. And if you're going with the tablet from Xenology the ancient ones created all the races. Except Tau. The Eldar made those.
And the Adeptus Mechanicus already had the technology. The Dragon was a gift from the Emperor, who had defeated the Dragon and taken his power in Lybia on Earth in ancient times.
