Because all Astartes are chemically sterilized. They need something else to compare. (My robe is longer than yours)

Kanulwen is correct. The robes are worn by members of the inner circle, so if you're wearing the robes, you know the secret.

What annoys me is the that The Fallen (bad Dark Angels) are often shown wearing robes as well (see the model of Cypher below), which is dumb because they were the reason for the creation of the inner circle and needless to say aren't likely to become members anytime soon. Equally dumb is when The Fallen are shown wearing green armour (see the GW paint scheme for Cypher below), even though they turned traitor during the heresy when DA armour was black.

Rant over.

This is the "dark secret" of the dark angels.

You heard it here first folks!

They could have just sent them to the Emperor's Children, they would have gladly traded.

Maybe now that's the case (I don't care enough to actually read the codex to confirm), but wearing the cassocks is a tradition that harks back to their knightly orders. That's why the Fallen wear them. Their whole beef with the Lion is that he betrayed Caliban and his brothers, so they are probably as upset about the DA wearing cassocks as you are about the Fallen wearing them.

Can't argue about the armor colors though.

The ones that wear the robes are supposed to signify the members in the chapter that know the of the dark secret about the traitorous Fallen. Also they wear the robes because the Dark Angels are also monkish warriors in fluff as well.

the DA should be black still but they labeled the Salamander Green "Dark Angels" Green and shipped them before they checked lol. They then had to cover it up but I guess they never really did lol. It was all an accident on GW's part

the main reason is that it's a tradition passed on from the knightly orders of caliban

Their secret is that half of the DA Legion went traitor during the Heresy.

How else do you differentiate the different marine chapters other than color? You change the color AND add a robe.

If I could get away with it, I'd wear robes all the time. It looks awesome.

We actually don't have the numbers right now.

The way the Horus Heresy novels are unfolding it, it's not "half of the DA Legion went traitor(as in: declared themselves for Horus)". It's "Jonson's trusted mentor and lieutenant, Luther, led the Dark Angels on Caliban into seceding from the Imperium and declaring themselves independent".
