Getting screwed over by opponents dropping happens in all kind of tournaments.

In M:TG the tie breaker in placement is opponent score, ie. how well your opponent did in their other games. Imagine the joy when your first turn(out of 8) opponent leaves because you beat him and thus gets a total opponent score score of zero, effectively preventing you from placing in the top three most of the times, unless you do a flawless tournament.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

While it is true that MtG has a tie break system based on opponent's match win percentages, it's worth mentioning that it's the total matches won out of total matches played by all opponents that matter. So in this example, and assuming a five-round tournament where your other four opponents stayed in, that one guy makes less than a 5% difference to your total result. It's likely if you've been doing well for the tournament that it's better for you if he drops than if he stays in for a 2-2-1 record or similar.

When I still used to go to tournaments, all matches you didn't attend were marked as 0:2 loss. So he would actually count as having lost all eight rounds.

At the end of the day 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the prelims is the same, it means you get to play in the real event for the real prize.

Not quite, If he drops he would only have W/L/D for the rounds participated in.

Well no one really bothers to start threads talking about that one okay game they had against a nice, if not particularly memorable opponent...

In competitive play where scoring like this occurs, never accept concession.

Consider everything your opponent removes from the table to be killed and continue taking your turns assuming your opponent does nothing. Report the final result to the judge.

It is unreasonable to punish the player that did not concede.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

I ran the Ard Boyz for my LGS and ran into a similar situation. What I told the winning player to do was use his remaining available turns and move his units as far towards the objectives as he could. If he had enough movement distance left to claim them he could get the bonus points.

While it sucks that some douche robbed you of some points I think what happened was for the best. It stops people from planning on bailing to give a mate max points. However it doesn't stop people sabotaging each other.
A good compromise would have been to let you play the remaining turns. If that meant your army could get more done then thats just good luck. And it makes more sense fluff wise

At least with a walkout you get a win, In my last tournament, I was smashing up an IG player pretty badly, and it was clear he wasn't going to win, so he pulled a "go slow" on me, and dragged out his game so that we didn't get to the end of turn 5 (Tournament had a fixed 5 turn limit)
Since the game was unfinished, by tournament rules it was declared a draw.
By drawing rather than winning I was denied a podium place.

If the thought of something makes me giggle for longer than 15 seconds, I am to assume that I am not allowed to do it.
