Misspelled listings, followed closely by wrong listings. You can often find incredibly cheap stuff if you look for slight misspellings. People don't see these items, so nobody bids on them. It's also worth browsing occasionally, as people will have something listed wrong, and you can scoop it up. I got long OOP miniatures this way, including a Nagash (man, that model is hilariously bad) listed as a Dark Elf Necromancer. Wha?

Oh yes, good old "rouge trader", have picked up the occasional bargain that way.

Commander Shepard: Let me know if it's too quiet for you to sleep, and I'll find you someplace louder.
Tali'Zorah: Hmm.

I just got 134 eldar models for under $84.00 including shipping, all were metal all but the extra 8 heavy weapon crew members are desirable figures. less than $0.65 each is sweet. Some were original 1987 RT era Space Elves.

The words "pro painted" lose a lot of meaning when they're in the same sentence as eBay

filbert wrote:Ebay is OK. Not sure if it is just me but I have noticed in recent years that genuine bargains are getting harder and harder to find on there. Sellers seem to be getting a bit more savvy. The downside to this is that all too often, people check their stuff against the GW retail price and think 'oh so it's worth x amount' and list it as such, even if said listing is for old and broken models, crappily assembled and globbed in paint.

But if you are patient and trawl through the listings, every so often you can find a real gem.

Indeed.

I think we can look at the 'professional painters' for some of the price hikes, buying up second hand figures for almost retail and then painting and putting them out at a high margin.

I beg to differ, since there's some incredible commission painters out there; I'm not even counting myself here. Just making a joke that most "pro painted" models on eBay are garbage, as you're aware.

My point is that, due to the prolific nature of people who say, "I sold a painted miniature. Therefore, that makes me a professional. All of my models will be listed as 'pro-painted' from now on," the term "pro-painted" has lost value in general.

For those who truly ARE professionals (GMM, BTP, Garden Ninja, etc), or even who put out that level of quality but only sell occasionally, it's still accurate, of course. It's just the term that has lost significance.

Take most big cities now days. You start yelling "Help," and almost nobdoy comes (if anyone). Yess "Fire," though, and you'll get a LOT more response. A specific cry for "help" has lost "value" in todays "market," unfortunately. Same principal applies... it's just far less unfortunate with minis. lol

That's all I meant by it.

Of course, I always turn to the make-up dealers of the 41st millenium, they're the very foundation of the empire after all.

Yea I bought a huge box of 40k stuff for 300 bucks. It had tons of Tau and necron stuff with lots of imperial guard and some old OOP eldar stuff too. I mostly bought it to use the Tau vehicles (the transport ones, I forget what they are called) in a diorama and since they were going to be crashed the models being beat up didn’t matter so much.

But yea this stuff was ROUGH. Everything had pretty much been assembled with wood glue and the primer was freaking thick so as to obscure a lot of details. After two days in simple green and some time in the dishwasher it was a little better but man, I wish I had just saved my money, for all the work I had to put in.

Second hand models are sometimes a good deal, but not so much when you have to do so much fixing up to even use em.

Patience and luck are your friends on ebay. Bartertown is nice, but there, you generally have people who know what they are selling.

Not always-one guy was selling 10 Mounted Daemonettes for 50 bucks on bartertown. Juan Diaz ones. Value of $200 at the time. He sure didn't know the value of what he had, but I did. Got some good use out of those girls for a while.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

When I see something like that (mounted Daemonettes), I always try to PM the guy to be sure he understands the value of what he has.

Many times, I've turned down and counter offered on trades because it was clear that my trade partner didn't understand what they had & was cheating himself. I want a good deal, but I don't want to skin anyone alive on it.
