One side note, if you're planning on using pistol or rifle cases, is that several members here have reported their cars were stolen into and the cases stolen. I'm not saying they were stolen because the likely-disappointed thieves were after firearms, but it is a consideration.
That, or don't leave your miniatures in your trunk.

I keep building my own boxes as the number of models inrease. It really is a good alternative to the gw ones and its easy; tape plenty of bubblewrap inside and and put shredded foam between the models, there you go.

I have one GW case and it's not really bad. It's just limited in options. 3 infantry foam trays with only one size holes.

Which is a good point.
Also, be aware that if you get pulled over by the cops and have a pistol case sitting on your passenger seat (or a rifle case in the back), be prepared for the officer to be a jerk about it think you have a firearm in the car.

When are the police not jerks tbh?

I bought one of the old big silver cases off ebay (£40, came with some random IG and a load of metal sisters of battle) I then bought foam from KR to replace the chopped up stuff that was inside, works an absolute treat.
The idea I've got in mind is to get 2 sets of pick & pluck, and some generic 40 compartment stuff so It fits my skaven and ork infantry, and just swap out the pick & pluck dependant on which army I'm taking.
It's actually pretty damn good quality, very sturdy plastic and no signs of wear on the hinges/handle/clasps/etc!

they are fine, as said before you need to make your own holes for anything other than stand rank and file marines, but they get the job done. I also have the really old ones that squashed your models into 2 sides then you clasped it shut it crushed everything, happy times.

There are better cases, but the GW ones don't completely suck. I still use them for my D&D stuff (mostly metal reaper miniatures).
Also, gun cases will get you funny looks and/or stopped by "the man" on occassion.
