I was just talking about those stories that go around Facebook from time to time. Something about cancer or diabeetus and followed by 95% of people won't be brave enough to repost or something similar.

Many people on ponychan believe it is true. Can't say I blame them. They often get posts describing depression, bad days, dark thoughts etc. This particular post is the most elaborate I've seen. I'm undecided on whether he is a troll or not. On one hand, you have the almost rediculous story. The internet spawns these threads sometimes. On the other, you have the fact that he is a regular, and notable contributor. Imagine a popular person on DakkaDakka. What have I to lose? I really am grateful for the opinions though. It had never even crossed my mind that he may be trolling. I suppose we will find out. Automatically Appended Next Post: And honestly, I kinda hope he IS a troll. Pancreatic Cancer isn't something that your definitively diagnosed with once in a clinic either. It presents with vague symptoms that, over time, might trigger a biopsy. The only way you're being told you have it is if they think you already might.
Also, debts don't transfer to next of kin unless they are separately liable, meaning a co-signing.
It's little details, but given the specificity of many of his statements, he's not going to screw up his diagnosis if he went through it.

I think that's a good thing. I'm sorry it gets abused...but really there is not much to lose by giving genuine advice to a person who doesn't need it. Goddard, it is awesome that you have a big enough heart to care for someone you have never met... you're a good person. Even the lightest most passive check on Google would reveal the truth about Pancreatic Cancer. "Pancreatic cancer can be controlled only if it is found before it has spread and only if it can be removed by surgery. If the cancer has spread, palliative treatment can improve the patient's quality of life by controlling the symptoms and complication; however, palliative treatment cannot cure the disease." Link: http://cancer.emedtv.com/pancreatic-cancer/pancreatic-cancer-survival-rates.html This person wants attention, pure and simple. Please don't waste another second of your life Goddard on someone like this... I don't care how often he posts on "ponychan" I feel he is faker.

I'm smiling right now, because I was so friggen right to post this here. I'm still undecided on what to think, but good ole Dakka came through and made me think differently.
I'm making a thread now on ponychan, asking if we should approach these kinds of threads with a fresh perspective. I'll edit this post when it's complete.

I don't think we actually have a subject here anymore considering that the OP was pretty much proven to be false.
Connor McKane wrote:We get it. You don't care for Ponychan.
I don't really know what it is, but I know what 4chan is and I know there are a handful of people obsessed with a little girls cartoon show and my guess would be that it is some unholy union of the two. Either way, barring even knowing what it is if you can't see how the sentence "Many people on ponychan believe it is true" is a strange thing to say as some sort of defense, well, your just not giving it enough consideration. What I do know is when someone is using "we" when they actually mean "I" they are masking some insecurity.

What I do know is when someone is using "we" when they actually mean "I" they are masking some insecurity. I have not lied. The majority of the posters (and even the moderators) assume the story is true. I did too, until I came here. I have left the situation with a new perspective. Automatically Appended Next Post: The Nature of Trolling
I bring to you, /chat/ a somewhat controversial subject. I'd like to make perfectly clear that this is NOT an attack to ANY who have posted something related to this subject. I'm also using my chan name, so that it might add some sincerity.
This thread is inspired by a few factors. Perhaps the largest of which is a thread that appeared in /chat/ recently. It was a story about someone, who has lived a very tough life, and is contemplating suicide (obviously very much abbreviated). The thread naturally was greeted with unadulterated love and support. I'm proud of that, and that is something I will always love about ponychan. I was so touched by this story, that I reposted it to another forum I frequent. I asked the members of this forum what advice they could give this individual. The response was not at all what I was expecting, but for different reasons. Posters said they thought the person had made a sob story for attention or for whatever purpose... or in layman's terms:trolling. They had provided valid evidence directly from the post to support their claims. (I will not go into more detail, I'd like this to remain nuetral).
So, I'm somewhat conflicted, to be perfectly honest. On one hand, I would like to believe (ironically) that they are telling the truth, that these terrible things are facts. But on the other, it is quite possible that it is a complete fabrication. I will continue to post supportive comments in such threads, and mean every word, for the following reason. What have I got to lose? If I say kind, supportive, or give sound, good advice, then that's great. Not only does the OP get that advice, but everyone who reads it benefits from it. Or, if the OP is in fact trolling, what have I lost? Nothing at all, really.
To further the discussion, and defend the opposing argument why would someone create a story like that? What could they possibly gain? I've thought about it, and the only reason I could think of would be two things: attention, and jealousy. Any regular to /chat/ knows that threads like the one I described do show up. I believe most of them to be genuine. The responses to these posts are consistantly honest and good advice. I could easily see someone get jealous of all these nice things said, and decide that they deserve some as well. And the way to do that, is make a thread, and count on the trusting nature of ponychan to make it so.
So what this boils down to, is really this: What do you, ponychan, think about these threads? I'm pretty confused myself. Am I alone? Is this kind of question frowned upon here? I know it is a sensitive issue...but I feel strongly enough about it to make a post concerning it.
Let us not make this a witch-hunt either.
That is what I have posted.
