Killing your allies on the field hardly sounds like self-sacrifice, but voluntarily walking into a tide of something that can kill you without a chance to fight back and no way to fight back anyways on the mere hope that you can banish the Daemon responsible for unlocking it does seem like self-sacrifice.

What irks me is it seems like the Grey Knights, who fight daemons regularly, would already be equipped for the Blood Tide.

Thing is, we only have one "Bloodtide" to go off of from the background.

And it's not Daemonic, at least not entirely. It's a swarm of nanomachines that strip you down to your bones, tearing through Astartes armor no less.
