Perhaps these companies should concentrate on the bits market or is that a too blinkered view? My standpoint is that I like a lot of what ....For example would you say it was viable in all senses to construct a 'not space marine army'?

You fail to see the point of these small resin shops. They are not -for the most part- trying to sell entire armies. They exist to sell unique charachters and display pieces. Some people do build armies out of them, just as some people build entire armies out of Forge world figures which are similarly priced, but that's not the target market or a common use. Manufactureres who are trying to sell entire armies are using plastic WGF, Warlord, Mantic, etc. but that in no way defeats the purpose or viability of resin producers.

It's what is known as "boutique". Every hobby, from instruments, to wargaming, to scale models has "boutique" sellers who sell a specialized product, with limited target market, at a preimium price. They survive not by appealing to the masses, but by appealing to those who can afford to spend more for something "special".

That's a silly statement without any basis in fact, especially seeing GW's switch to finecast. Resin, plastic and metal all continue to be widely used for different purposes by model companies around the world.
