Personaly i find this forum better than most there is little willfull misspelling, i.e. Leet or text. What dose annoy me is the people who insist on just quoteing what you say and putting "might want to use a spell checker". Its's just rude. I'm dyslexic and try my best and do spellcheck as much as i can, but it dose not always work, or even possible most of the time due to the nature of forums. The need to copy and paste, spell check and paste back, avoiding anything which is not normal English. Very annoying, if you even have time or are on a divice you can do that on.
Doing this is the same as telling a deaf person to speak properly. Very rude, and insulting.
If your polite thats fine, but no need to be rude.

Ah, I misread.
As I said in my "rant", I am not perfect either. Pretty funny how some people get so defensive about this subject.
"Defensive" is a poor choice of words. I don't take issue with peopel pointing out my own mistakes. i take issue with people being d-bags about what are essentially non-issues fueled by the false courage and anonimity that the interwebz gives them...
I readily admit that I mysefmake grammar/spelling mistakes: sometimes because I rush to post something, sometimes becasue I don't use spell check, and sometimes because I simply spell something wrong.
My issue is with people that feel the need to ride in on a high horse and belittle others for no good reason as threads like this are witness to.
Does a mispelled word or lack of a period really hurt of effect me in any way?
Do the grammar errors of random and anonimous people on a toy soldier forum cause me bodily harm, threaten my family or result loss of income?
If the worst thing you have to complain about in a world full of homelessness, disease, famine, war, divorce, children with disabilities, political corruption and a host of other bothersome things is that little Jimmy spelled "Eldar wrong or forgot a period in his post then I guess I would consider myself lucky.
I can think of a million causes that are more worthy of being angry/passionate about then if "Waaaghmaster42" used a semi-colon correctly in his treatise on Nob Warbiker superiority.
That being said, I certainly wouldn't have errors in my own initial post if I felt the need to post it anyways, because that just opens one up to any abuse that follows...
Not to mention that this same passive-aggressive thread happens about 2-3 times a month it seems and always ends the same.
Maybe a more productive response to incorrect grammar you encounter would be to PM the offenders and tell them that they made grammar errors and suggest that they fix them.
Or better yet if repeat offenders are truely bothersome then the ignore features comes in very handy.

Back on topic. My main problem with with commas and apostrophes. I'm never quite sure whether i've used a comma in the right place or if a certain word is supposed to have an apostrophe. Now i know that thats pretty basic stuff when dealing with spelling and typing but its just never something i have never been able to remember well. I think i get it right for the most part, but i can never be sure. <--- Like back there for example. Did i need a comma after "part"? Or should have just let the sentence go with out it? I guess i'll never know...
Interesting side note: I found myself triple checking this post just to make sure i hadn't ballsed anything up. Anyone else find themselves doing this?

Edit->Firefox Preferences->advanced tab->general subtab->Seventh checkbox down = "Check my spelling as I type".
It puts red squigglies under misspelled works like "squigglies". I'm on Firefox 6.0.2 for Linux, but it's been there in every version I can recall since about 2.0. I think it uses some hacked up internalized version of the aspell library, but I'd actually have to dig into it to find out. Suffice to say, it SHOULD be checking your spelling.

Some newer versions don't have it.
You need to go to Mozilla's website and grab the add-on for your particular region.
If you have a newer version of FF, the option to turn spell check off/on should be under 'options'

I think that although witnessing really shocking spelling or grammar can be frustrating. Correcting people on small minor errors is FAR more annoying.
One thing I notice so often now listening to journalists on the radio in the car.
Putting a more/less in front of a word that implies the more/less. It just makes the person sound really stupid.
Example - He found the meat loaf more better than he did last week.
Its not the greatest example but I keep hearing this sort of things (even from my fiancee, grit my teeth when it happens)
Its the only thing that really grinds my gears. People who pick you up on any little error need to be burnt alive Automatically Appended Next Post: I think that although witnessing really shocking spelling or grammar can be frustrating. Correcting people on small minor errors is FAR more annoying.

Hello there.
I am British.
I went to an expensive boarding school and I am dyslexic.
The irritating thing about the spelling/grammar issue is the anger generated upon correction.
I am very careful on international forums to bear in mind the regional differences (thru/through for example) but I will correct people.
The reason is simple.
Wrong is wrong, if nobody ever corrects you for being wrong how can you ever expect to be right?
Why bother?
You are probably (generally) quite a young demographic on this forum and many of you have not yet finished school of college.
As an employer I immediately throw job applications in the bin if they contain serious spelling and grammar mistakes.
Bear that in mind.
Obviously there can be certain idiomatic usages allowed that are not strictly correct grammar due to forum posts representing conversational English.
But certain things should be pointed out:
Tautological usage:
As lukewild1982 pointed out, "more better" is tautological.
Sadly in the same post he used the tautology "small minor errors".
Homophones, homilies and homonyms:
To, too and two; they're, their, and there; bare and bear; whole and hole.
You get the idea, because they sound the same and are real words used in the wrong way a spell checker cannot correct them. You need to learn the correct ones.
Apostrophes:
The rules for the use of apostrophes are pretty simple.
The most important thing to know is that plurals and pronouns do not get them.
e.g. ours, chips, menus, bullets.
Apostrophes are used where letters have been omitted or to imply ownership.
e.g. they're is a condensation of "they are" with the space and the "a" removed. if something belongs to you it is yours, no apostrophe because it is a pronoun, if something belongs to Dave it is Dave's.
Basically, don't take a correction personally. Take it on board, learn from it. Improve yourself.

Grammar is kind of relative, I think.
At work, one of the judge's told me that he likes my work just fine, although he has to proofread it so "he doesn't look like an idiot."
I'm drafting legal documents, and nobody really has a problem with me relying on word's grammar check.

I completly dissagree with you. For a start there is a big diffrence between posting on a forum and writting a CV. Secondly as an employer and dyslexic you should be aware that to throw a CV in the bin for errors could be in breach of the dda. A forum on wargameing is not the place to try and correct someones spelling..
Secondly, it is personal. So often people dismiss what others are saying and attack there spelleing and grammer. And will not politley point out an error, but give a torrent of abuse. There is a big diffrence between "perhaps people might be better able to understand your point if x y z" when someone has written a wall of text with no capitals or punctuation in leet and "it's your not you'er you idiot" in reply to a well worded multi paragraph post.
Thirdly, please do tell me, as a dyslexic, how you learn from someone saying "your spellings crap"? That is what i get all of the time. And fyi, I'm dyslexic and have never had problems at work, or getting a job. I am a manager and work for a major publishing house.

I think we can all agree that correct grammar is nice and should be a goal.
In fact I don't have an issue with people expecting it or wanting people to use it.
MY issue is more with people that feel the need to belittle others in threads like this and act like they have never made similar mistakes. It is even more sad/amusing when they have errors in their own posts as flame others for same...
