You can have solid red without it being too bright. The problem when trying to use "dark red", by painting it and then using washes, it can come out looking messy, uneven, and blotched.
A "clean" red can be hard to get, but it looks awesome. Given Blood Red's covering weakness, I'd get Vallejo Flat Red (and other reds), though they have to be mixed with a bit of water or they'll come out too thick.

Another Old school trick, is to spray him black. Then paint several layers of pink (yes pink), bright candy floss pink. Then paint Blood red over the top, and it will be alot brighter without the need to use oranges, yellows or Washes.

There is a GW painting Guide that shows the two different methods of painting the exact same model (A blood angel)
One with Black Primer.
The other with Black Primer then painted Pink.
The finish between the two different models is very, very noticable. I will dig out a Scan on the Picture when I get home and post it up.

basecoat White!! (P3 Primer works very well)
If you put blood red on top of white, it covers in 1 go, sometimes 2.. with no issues.
Now, this will make it very bright red. Which is no issue, Use a heavy wash of Baal Red and it will be darkend down.
Between black, devlin mud, baal red washes.. its always easier and faster to go Light to dark then it is from Dark to light.
If I base coat white then the Blood Angels will look bright but I want mine abit darker therefore using brown will prevent the brightness.
He explained that with correct washes, it darkens down the colors, i use this when painting my imperial guard army.
lighter colors than i would want, then when the wash comes in it not only does the washes job, but makes everything else dark (granted you do a heavy wash)
PS. my guard are Vostroyan, so they are more dark, evil Russians than the usual green

I use the Pure Red Primer from The Army Painter and it works awesome:
http://usshop.thearmypainter.com/products.php?ProductGroupId=2
Some people like to use the Dragon Red as it is a bit darker.
This kills two birds with one stone as you dont have to deal with the foundation paints and multiple layers.
I did these guys with Pure red and then washed with Badab Black after all the detail ect. were painted.

The red is slightly modified from the WD Space Hulk Masters Tutorial.
Foundation: Scorched Brown Foundation followed by several thin coats of Heavy Red.
Wash: Several washes of Devlan Mud applied heavily to the recesses.
Mid-Tone: Scarlet Red was painted with a few thin coats
Highlights: Started with a 1:1 thick highlight of Scarlet Red and Blood Red, then a second highlight of Blood Red, a thin highlight of Hot Orange, and finally a very thin highlight of 1:1 Filthy Brown and Hot Orange.
Wash: Baal Red was washed over the areas.

Choose your weapons carefully.
I actually do infantry models by priming grey, I used to undercoat dark flesh or mechrite(scab) red then blood red. Now I prime grey, paint blood red, wash with a brown red, and redo large flats with blood red and highlight.
For vehicles I prime black and paint red, wash brown red, and edge highlight.

So, a friend of mine just got me into 40k, and since I have the spare cash, I'm hooked. I decided to go with BA since they seemed to fit my play style and because they would need half as many models for any given list. I've tried several different methods that I've read on here as well as what my friends have suggested. It seems that anything painted with Blood Red in less than natural sunlight looks some shade of orange. Of course, I'm new to this, so I'm having to learn from trial and error on practice marines, but I don't wanna begin painting my main army until I find a good color. Using black and mechrite makes it darker than what I'd like for infantry, but may work on vehicles. Will anything bright invariably look orange? I still need to try the pink method.

Yes. I mean it doesn't have to but it has that distinct tendency, one might even say it SHOULD be a little orange. To wit I point you to the following image and instruct you to carefully read the text on the bottom right paint.

I think I'm gonna go with the pink base with blood red over it. Brighter infantry look better to me. However, I don't want my land raider to be the same. Does anyone know how the tanks in the codex were painted?
